And to mix things up – here’s a Holy Champion that I’ve included in the book. Just needs mechanics and it should be GTG.
Holy Champions of Saluwe’ – the Rat Catchers
Rats – every city has them.
That’s not to say that one can’t find them in rural places or the deep wilderness, but they seem to grow in number and sizes unheard of in the urban environment. Never welcome, always chased off or killed when discovered, rats are a four legged pestilence upon humanity. So wherever rats are found, rat catchers are not far behind.
Most rat catchers come from the very lowest rung of human society and unless doing their job are not welcomed in most places. Rat Catchers set traps, use specially bred and trained dogs known as terriers, or scurry into cramped and dank places to catch them by hand, making their hygiene questionable at best, but when there is an infestation of rats, the name of the local Rat Catcher is on everyone’s lips.
However, there is a type of rat that is beyond the ability – these are Rat Men, often lycanthropes cursed to take on the shape of a man-rat. Some say these vile creatures are the result of a curse laid upon a group of hoarders and misers by Saluwe’, while others believe these creatures were created by sorcerous means by the foul Cancerites known as the Blight Bearers.
This part of the legend is given credence due to the Rat Men of the Faerdwalden, whose existence have been a continuous vexation upon the citizens of Milandir. These particular rat-Men have been cited as the cause of several outbreaks of rampant plague that has claimed many lives in Treslau and Tralia and their roots have been traced back to the foul Blight Bearers.
And yet, the Rat-Men of other cities seem to be a different breed; able to change their shape from small sized rats to enormous versions of rodents. They also have been known to breed and command entire swarms of rats; the most famous of these was the infestation that caused the entire city of Sulpecci to be evacuated until legions were sent in to quell the problem.
What most do not know is that ahead of the legions, a small group of Holy Champions of Saluwe’, known as the Rat Catchers, were sent ahead of them and dealt with the Rat-Men commanding the swarm, leaving the legionnaires to deal with the now leaderless normal rats.
Trained by the priesthood in a small temple within the Golden Boughs of Saluwe’, an Order of Holy Champions are trained in dealing with lycanthropes of all kinds – whether it be wolf, boar, bear or rat. Here they are taught the tell-tale signs of how to discover whether a person has the taint when in human form, given a holy blessing that makes them immune to contracting the curse should they indeed be dealing with a lycanthrope, as well as in skills of hunting and tracking their targets.
Only during the last portion of their training must the Holy Champion decide which prey to hunt. For those who choose the path of the Rat Catcher, they are then trained in the weapons of their Order – the net: a finely meshed net that even the smallest of rodents could not escape from, the spear: a slender weapon capable of being used in tight spaces as well as keeping your prey at bay, and the dagger: when the time comes to deal with the cursed being, the ability to fight with two daggers counters their deadly claws. The aspirant Holy Champion is also taught a handful of spells, such as a blessing that may be applied upon a weapon that will make it possible to kill the cursed beast, a ward to keep swarms of normal rats at bay, and so on.
The Order is open to all humans and human subtypes who take Saluwe’ as their patron deity, such as the Dark Kin and gnomes. Although dwarves or ss’ressen would not be turned away, none have ever appealed for entry into the Order. Due to their opposition spiritually to the human Pantheon and to Saluwe’ specifically as the destroyer of Marok, elorii are not allowed entry into the Order.
In the First City, a rumor is being investigated by an elder Rat Catcher by the name of Doric val’Dellenov, about a cult of Rat-Men worshiping some sort of Rat-God or Infernal Lord. Thus far, he has not discovered much as he is a very old man and not able to descend into the depths of the city as he once could.

1) By the fluff, there are many specializations beyond simply “Rat Catcher”, and do you want these represented? For example, you can make something like this:
Apprentice Hunter of Lycanthropes
Requirements: Holy Champion of Saluwe’ (pa)
Skills: Tracking, Wilderness Lore OR Streetwise
Talents: Hunter (Monstrosity), Weapon Proficiency (See Special)
Special: The weapon training you gain depends on the type of creature you choose to hunt. Rat-Catchers gain Proficiency in the Net, Bear-Hunters gain Proficiency in the Pike, Wolf-Hunters gain Proficiency in Bows, and Boar-Hunters gain Proficiency in the Short Spear.2) If we were to put Rat Men (or Lycanthropes) into creature category, what would you like them to be? Monstrosity (as they are cursed creatures)? Humanoid (Rat Man)? Or would they gain their own category to add to (say) Hunter (ta)?
3) Is this order fairly secretive? I get that from the fluff as they didn’t gain much accolades from cleansing Sulpecci. This could add things like Deceit, Shady, and Stealth as appropriate things to give them. Additionally, their title of Rat Catcher–especially related to the fact that ‘nromal’ Rat Catchers are viewed as the lower rungs of society–could affect their ability to be viewed as Good, Stalwart Holy Champions so Flaws like “Dubious Reputation” could be incorporated.
December 16, 2013 at 1:45 pm #253467AnonymousInactiveThis is what myself, Matt, and Tony came up with:
Initiate:
Requirements: Anointed Priest of Saluwe or Holy Champion of Saluwe
Trained Skills: Tracking and Arcanum(Cants) or 1 Combat Skill
Talents: Weapon Training (Nets) and Hunter:Vermin or Rebuke Vermin*Master:
Requirements: Initiate rank
Trained Skills: Mettle and Larceny or Stealth
Talents: Weapon Training (Sphairai) and Slayer of Vermin* or Smite Infidel*Rebuke Vermin (Devout, Limited): When you cast rebuke spell, you can apply to creatures of the Vermin subtype.
*Slayer of Vermin (Combat, Limited)
Requirement: Hunter: Vermin
Benefit: Once per Scene, if you succesfuly attack any minion or common creature of the Vermin subtype (including Rat Men), you instantly slay (not Vanquish) that creature despite its Armor Rating, remaining Wounds or Stamina. IF the target attacked is not a minion or common creature, you deal your Passive Insight in addition ot teh attack’s normal damage.
Special (Limitation) : This ability may only be used against creatures of the vermin subtype.December 17, 2013 at 4:29 pm #253562AnonymousInactiveI’d axe the Smite Infidel talent from the 2nd Path personally because it doesn’t really fit with the fluff that we’ve been given. The Vermin Slayer is sufficient.

…or put a limitation on it to the vermin subtype which would include the Ratmen.
December 17, 2013 at 4:57 pm #253571AnonymousInactiveIn that case, the talent would be “Smite Vermin”.
I still question whether Lycanthropes would be Vermin. Ratmen have that quality, but this Order does more than just that (bears, wolves, boars, etc) and those other animals wouldn’t have that quality. Since the specialization is immediately before they go out in the world I personally think we should consider joining this with the others and making something more akin to the Gladiator background with different weapon proficiencies depending on the specialization.
December 19, 2013 at 9:04 pm #253819AnonymousInactiveTalents: Weapon Training (Sphairai)
Question: What does Greek-style boxing have to do with this? Why not just use a Cestus? Also, what does this have to do with hunting vermin? I would think a spear or a trident or a rock would be more appropriate?
December 19, 2013 at 9:23 pm #253823AnonymousInactiveMatt can better answer that than me. When we were discussing, it made very good sense and thought it was a good fit.
December 20, 2013 at 9:27 pm #253917AnonymousInactiveThe spharai is the bladed cestus variant. Going with them over spear and net let’s those who choose to be castors have a hand free while keeping a weapon Handy. They can have a net and the cestus. Also as a bladed cestus, it mimics claw attacks which seemed kind of appropriate for Vermin killers.
December 28, 2013 at 9:33 pm #254212AnonymousInactivePersonally, I’d move the Weapon Proficiency spharai and Net to the Initiate as both weapons are a bit on the weaker side (the net does no damage), and choose another talent for the Master level. Maybe Secret Spell (Repel Vermin) or something like that?
December 30, 2013 at 2:04 pm #254280AnonymousInactiveAnother option with the Talents would be to include both WTs at both the Initiate level and the Master level and have the character select 2 of the 3 available talents.
With a sweep of his…

January 6, 2014 at 7:23 pm #254603AnonymousInactiveHi all,
Matt & I compiled everyones ideas, input, feedback, etc and compiled the following for the Rat Catchers.
Initiate:
Requirements: Anointed Priest of Saluwe or Holy Champion of Saluwe
Trained Skills: Tracking and Arcanum(Cants) or 1 Combat Skill
Talents: Weapon Training (Nets) & Weapon Training(Sphairai) and Hunter:Vermin or Rebuke Vermin*Master:
Requirements: Initiate rank
Trained Skills: Mettle and Larceny or Stealth
Talents: Weapon Mastery (Sphairai) and Slayer of Vermin* or Smite Infidel (Vermin Foe Type Only)*Rebuke Vermin (Devout, Limited): When you cast rebuke spell, you can apply to creatures of the Vermin subtype.
*Slayer of Vermin (Combat, Limited)
Requirement: Hunter: Vermin
Benefit: Once per Scene, if you succesfuly attack any minion or common creature of the Vermin Foe Type (including Rat Men), you instantly slay (not Vanquish) that creature despite its Armor Rating, remaining Wounds or Stamina. IF the target attacked is not a minion or common creature, you deal your Passive Insight in addition ot teh attack’s normal damage.
Special (Limitation) : This ability may only be used against creatures of the vermin subtype.Hopefully we can put closure on this one.
January 6, 2014 at 7:39 pm #254608drafitParticipantHello again,
This looks good, but I’m not 100% sold on the Sphairai. THese are essentially either brass knuckles or used as a protection for the knuckles, etc.
I know Matt mentioned them being able to resemble claws of some sort, but that just doesn’t “sound” right for this type of character.
When dealing with vermin, you need either an area effect weapon to deal with swarms or something to deal with one or two of the bigger examples of vermin, such as Rat Men.
I just had a cool visual pop in my head of one of these Rat Catchers drinking something flamable, like alcohol and then spewing out a spray of flame. Should work well against swarms).
So what if this Holy Champion tradition has its roots from the Druidical sect that were subsumed by the Saluweans? Maybe give them a wicked looking hand sickle?
Thoughts?
January 6, 2014 at 7:52 pm #254610AnonymousInactiveMaybe give them Learn Exotic Spell (Breath of the Dragon)?
As for things for ‘squishing’ vermin, a bludgeoning weapon like a Maul or Club would probably be more effective than anything with a blade (like a Sickle). I like the Druidic source, though. Maybe a quarterstaff? This would be a fairly innocuous weapon which fits the apparent secrecy that the Order seems to enjoy from the fluff.
January 6, 2014 at 8:11 pm #254616drafitParticipantI like the exotic spell idea.
While I agree with you that a bludgening weapon is good for swarms, I was thinking of the sickle for one on one big versmin, like Rat Men.
But maybe an option for a bludgening weapon would be a good idea, as well.
