This has already probably been addressed but I am going to ask. Can one cast with holding a sword in one hand and a shield in the other? If not, give some helpful hints on how to make this work.

Any Other: No.Dump your Shield @ spd 2 if you need to cast?

Why Speed 2? Stowing a weapon is the speed cost of the weapon (unless you have Quick Draw at Tier 3). Therefore, stowing a shield away to cast a spell would be Speed 3, 4 or 5 (for Buckler, Small, and Large respectively). You could drop it of course but that’s different.

Is dropping a large or larger shield really free? Aren’t they usually strapped to the arm? Picking up does provoke free strikes, keep that in mind.

Still, dropping items means enemies could pick them up. I remember this discussion when an Altherian wanted to carry and drop lots of flintlock pistols

Pedro’s summary:
Player: “I drop my flintlock and draw another.”
Pedro: “The minion picks up your pistol and runs away. He dies old and wealthy.”December 18, 2013 at 6:10 pm #253712AnonymousInactivewhere the hell is my like button….

I think it’s to balance the power and flexibility of casting. It’s not really ‘hard’. The “must have a hand free” is pretty common in almost any game with spellcasting. Some games even make you have material components on hand.
December 19, 2013 at 1:12 am #253750frootsnaxParticipantIf you meet the prereqs then its only one talent to gain spell casting. That’s not a high cost of opportunity. And you can do it in heavy armor unlike many systems…so again from a strictly power standpoint, why wouldn’t you?
Lack of a shield puts you at a disadvantage vis-a-via other combat specialists who don’t have to dedicate a hand to cast spells.
