He appears in “Blood Soaked Dawn” (SP4-12) and “The Sea Lord’s Return” (SP4-16) as I recall.

Oswald the Beggar King also gets a write up in Green Ronin’s original Freeport, which the Arcanis version is based off of. As an aside I’d note that I see parallels between Oswald the Beggar King and the historical figure Emperor Norton of San Francisco.

Eric, you have previously stated you though that Oswald and the pretender line were connected, you still hold that opinion? (and do you have anything you might want to expand on that?)

Oswald the Beggar King was a val’Inares. Though apparently impoverished there were plenty of people who treated him with respect and honor and who either let him eat in their fine establishments or who gave him material goods … in other words he had supporters. And of course despite his “limited means” he carried himself like royalty.

It was implied in the LA Talk list that his name of Oswald was not an accident. Which creates an obvious link to the Oswald val’Inares known as the Usurper. KingvOswald’s son lost the throne by alienating most of Milandir’s nobles and in consequence many of Milandir’s val’Inares were booted off of their lands in the Eastmarch and became exiles.

That there is/was an Oswald Val Inares who was in the Pirate Isles and who claimed title is all circumstantial…but the pieces fit. Playing at being crazy/harmless might also be a good defense against assassins from Naeranth…at least in my mind.

Regardless, it’s my opinion that Freeports Oswald had more going on than just a crazy guy talking a good game. Hopefully your Pretender cert will come with info on your Mom and Dad. You get giant bonus points with me if your Pretender claims loyalty to the Mother Church and a pledge to Elandre to flip the Kingdom back if you ever get the Crown.

    LOL, well noted Eric.

Yeah I cant wait to see where this guys is coming from, I had a character concept that fit the “family in exile in the hinterlands” but then talking to matt flinn (thanks matt) he reminded me of the beggar king, and I went looking for info on him and now im all confused on who my parents might be.

It might be difficult to keep the beggar king them but if thats where the character comes from I REALLY want to keep that feel, becuse that character was awesome and hilarious.

Can you reference the val’Inares part? I don’t remember any references that say he was anything but human.

Plus there is only so much time before your character feels “The Calling” and travels through a portal to Abessios \":)\"

IIRC James Zweirs made a Freeport document that adjusted the characters of the Freeport book to fit with Arcanis. I remember the “Halfling Benevolence Association” was transformed into the Undir Benevolence Association. Mr Wednesday became Mr Vireda (Wednesday by another language) … and of course Oswald was spelled out as val’Inares. He did indeed have a fairly powerful blood rank.
