    Feb 1 – March 31

Follow thy drum; With man’s blood paint the ground, gules, gules; Religious canons, civil laws are cruel; Then what should war be?

We are going to take a sufficient amount of time to throw all sorts of crazy at people here, If I can imagine it, and can explain it then it might happen, all participants will be at the mercy of the dice at this point. Each contest will pit 2 or more contestants against each other against a combination of combat, environmental hazards, creatures brought in for the spectacle, traps, wilderness etc.

Animal companions and mounts will be treated as equipment, and will not always be available or feasible to use.

Special rewards and opportunities in each match will be given to the gladiators that can influence the crowd. These will become obvious during the matches.

Matches will take place online as arranged by the judge with participants

We are going to start off as a grinder named “The Beckonator”. Everybody gets to participate individually, and then we will be moving into random draws for spectacle events, with 3 “swiss” style spectacles before taking the top four gladiators into the Final four (Part four of the contest)

The Beckonator, Being a Timed event, will be judged on how long it takes you to complete the gauntlet, with Penalties for Stamina and Wound damage. the best score will get three points 2nd and 3rd place will get 2 points, 4th 5th and 6th will get 1 point and everyone else will get 0 points

    Spectacle Matches
    A Win in a match = 3 points
    A Draw in a Match = 1 point
    A Loss in a match = 0 points
Each match will have defined Win/Lose/Draw conditions

    Rep | Points | Name
    +0 | 0 | AJ Nicholson’s Vukisian Val’Dellnov “The Dog of War”
    -1 | 0 | Cody Bergman’s Aria Val’Virdan “Nier’s Chosen Gladiator”

I will be using this first post as the official source for information dispersal, and thus not be keeping an edit log

Fate doesn’t belong in the arena, however, the attitude of the crowd is going to have a significant impact on the fights, Everybody is going to have a “reputation” score and all of the rules are going to be at the bottom of this post.

Remember, Nothing excites the crowd like blood.

    Factors for Starting reputation
    Race :
    Val +0
    Human,Undir,Ssressen,Dwarf +1
    Dark Kin,Gnome,Elorri -1

    Nation:
    Pirate Isles,Hinterland +1
    Coryani Empire,Milandir,Almeric,Dwarf +0

    Background
    Undisciplined Psion,Awakened Psion,Exile/Expat +0
    Former Canton,Former Gladiator,Mercenary +1
    Sanctorum mage, Noble Born -1

    Flaws
    Dubious Reputation,Code of Honor,Chilling Presence,Horribly Scarred -1
    Branded,Bloodthirsty +1
    Prejudiced (authority Figures),Phobia (storms) +0

    Negative reputation to the Crowd
    Rolling double 1’s (Critical Miss)
Getting caught cheating (in a match)
    Getting wounded
Delaying a match (running away, etc)
Trying too hard to be showy

    Positive reputation to the Crowd
    Critical hit
    Successful Feint
    Successful Demoralize opponent (Intimidate)
    Acrobatic/Athletic Trick
    Trip/ Disarm
Pin an enemy In a grapple
    Winning a match
    Entering dramatically(ask about this)

At the beginning of every match, both gladiators are going to roll a D6-2( The Fickleness of the Crowds) and add their Current Reputation score. During the course of the spectacles, things like critical hits and special maneuvers (typical ones outlined above) can influence the Current Reputation Score. Reputation Scores will carry over from match to match.

Things that Reputation can be Spent On:
1 point can be spent for +2 to a roll
3 points can be spent for a re-roll
5 points can be spent to give an opponent -2 to all action skill rolls for 12 ticks

Hmmm… I have a slight problem with this. First, these bonuses are not insignificant. And the fact that these characters were built in the dark of what these bonuses were going to be based on makes them a pretty big craps-shoot. Second, it does not take into account that infamy can be as big of a motivating factor as fame. People love to hate the villain. And I submit that having a negative (infamous) reputation can be as big of a motivating factor as having a positive (famous) reputation. The greatest stories don’t just have the greatest heroes, but generally have the greatest villains as well.

Well The bonuses are less powerful than what you could get with fate, and since we wont be using fate , I think thats pretty fair.

Fame / Infamy its all reputation, you get it because your good at what you do you loose it when you do things the crowd doesnt like. Dark Kin are going to get jeered at when they get announced, choices have consequences.

I think its a pretty good representation of general crowd opinions based on sterotypes for people that are hanging out in censure.

I agree with Scott. I don’t see how this is balanced. It seems that some characters have a large advantage. Namely the Ss’ressen. Not only do they and some other start out with a larger reputation the list of things that can when you points largely favors their builds as well. The list of things that can build points seems logical in a gladiatorial arena so that I can appreciate. However, my understanding was to see what kind of characters we can make to look for holes in the rules. Giving this already impressively built characters easy access to be able to add to their already considerable abilities does not seem balanced.
I also agree with him about the bad guy thing as well. For instance Dubious Reputation means you are the black sheep so your “noble” family doesn’t like you. That kind of things is something the common man would appreciate.
Edit 1 – And heck I thought this took place in Arena in the Hinterlands. It does not make sense that the Miliandisian common foot soldier would have a positive reputation in the Hinterlands
Edit 2 – Also, building on my first Edit, I would think being from Milandir and Coryan would be a hindrance to your reputation for a fight that takes place in the Sicaris. I am sure many refuges from Mil Takara wound up settling there.
Coryani would not be as hated but for years the people of hinterlands bulked at being under their thumbs. The fact that they needed the trade from Coryani just gulled them even more. The Merchant and political leaders (not to mention the political merchant leaders) of Sicaris would have a frienamy relationship with them while the common man would just dislike but fear them.

    Just say’n

    But, Your contest your rules.

Sorry guys – (and Craig again), I’m going to have to drop also. I keep thinking my nights are going to get better with extra work and they are not. Best of luck to all and thanks for putting this together, Josh. Love to see something like this at a con.
