Just curious what Relics other Kickstarter backers took for their characters…

The best one that I have is a dagger once owned by St. Ignatius of Loyola. While he’s perhaps best known for founding the Jesuits, he also wrote the foundations of the Spiritual Exercises, meaning that this relic gives a bonus to Mysticism.

(Plus it would probably really annoy the Jesuits who hate Witch Hunters, which makes it all the more delightful)

I’m thinking of going with the Confessions of St. Cyprian, the former occultist turned saint. When he repented, he wrote down his confessions into a bound book. Several of the pages have turned up here and there, detailing occult rituals and other arcane practices, giving a bonus to Mysticism as well.

You know you can only have 1 / character right?

Nope, you can have 1 per Skill per character!

Per the Kickstarter: “This certificate cannot be combined with others to grant more than one die bonus to the same skill, although it can be purchased additional times for different skills.”

Hmm just checked and the wording is as you say. The Arcanis one specifically said 1 / character.

I may upset people but I think having more than 1 per character is really a bad idea. All it does is say “I spent tons of money so now I have +1d to a whole lot of skills; therefore, I’m carrying around so many holy relics that the Adversary himself ought to come and smite me down to retrieve them.”

I wonder if that was the actual intent in the Kickstarter was to have Witch Hunters as walking Reliquaries.

The way I see it, they’re all minor relics, and their attractiveness to minions of the Adversary (or anyone else) is proportionate to their mechanical effect. +1d is the same benefit gained from having an exceptional tool, or Tactical Edge. The Adversary would be a lot more interested in stealing Durendal or Joyeuse, and those swords have managed to stay in the hands of Witch Hunters for centuries.

I guess I’m just shaking my head at the thought of carrying that many minor relics and getting them out in use every time you make a different skill check.

+1d for 15 Skills is getting 750 “free” Survivor Points (Equivalent of getting Expertise 15 times) by spending $150 real money. I’m not sure that was the intent by PCi considering how careful they are to balance most things.

While I agree that it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, RP-wise. At this point, I think Pandora’s box has been opened and people have purchased relics from the Kickstarter. I think that at this point, we just have to accept that there will be some characters carrying around an obscene amount of minor relics. It’s a little unbalancing, and would be quite shocking, in-character, but I doubt that it will be game-breaking.

Are there rules for Grandmasters in terms of being able to steal/destroy/take away if there are folks with 15 of them? I assume they are not really able to be affected since people paid real money for them but I thought to ask.

    John,

You seem to have a real issue with this. It’s only one person with the 15 minor relics in question, so your post is basically asking how to act against that one person.

I don’t think that’s a proper stance to take. It was thanks to the gentleman in question that pledged an inordinate amount of money to make sure all of YOU would be able to get the book from the final stretch goal. As such, he took (and frankly, we gave) what we could to account for the amount pledged.

I hope this puts things in perspective and this line of reasoning ends.

    Thank you!

::shrug:: in terms of organized play, I don’t think it’s either unbalancing or game breaking. Maybe a bit cheese weasely, but I’ve seen far worse. The guy who drops $150 on the kickstarter is going to come to the table to play. And may even bring a few friends along. And that is a good thing.

I would also point out that, as a GM, best not to get lost in the weeds over this. However you feel about the award, I know I would be PISSED if some con GM started arbitrarily looting my character of a benefit he had paid for (fair and square and with the blessings of the publishers). I can think of very few instances where that would be alright. And bothering with it would just eat up time, which is unfair to the other players at the table.

I have to way of knowing that only one person had done this, so you are correct that it’s not a big deal. My concern was sitting down at table after table with people carrying around a treasure trove of relics and how to deal with it, if at all.

I was asking preemptively to avoid any issues should it come up at a table.

Given the answers, I believe I can safely assume then that people who paid for special characters can be fairly certain their characters are not going to be killed in an adventure, unless they do something specifically intended to do so.

For me, the matter is closed, thank you.

    Hello,

No, John, that is an incorrect assumption.

Anyone can die in an adventure.

You were asking, specifically, how to target these relics fr destruction. That’s what I was referring to.

Now I believe, the matter is closed.
