casters should be the “swiss army knife” of the party

players will play their characters in a multitude of ways, and maybe one in 1000 will play the way you expect them to.

I find problems with sweeping generalizations as this, I think that getting more head down in what the players are actually doing ( a not insignificant feat) would show you that some players make a nod to this but many are gearing up for more combat oriented spells

I agree with Josh. The game cannot be developed assuming a single role for casters. The traditions, sources, and character concepts are way too different to assume casters are the swiss army knife. In D&D and other games, it was possible to scribe scrolls of spells for those ‘rare occasions this might be useful’. I don’t think players have that option so taking a precious spell slot for a spell that might come up 1 time in each tier is not good use for a lot of players.

It’s not like they get few spells for 1 talent cost.. which is covered in an advancement option..

There are some spells (such as one to effect a specific type of creature which may f your party up) which you should get…

again, these are things you should be teaching players with inconsequential encounters before bludgeoning them with serious badass encounters.

I really think you should start scanning your comments for the “you should” type of comments, you might be surprised on how “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.” applies to your should be s

What would be *better* (I use that term in a general vague sense) for those ‘specialized’ cases is to have Adaptations for these things:

    Adaptation: Ethereal Spell

Requirements: Arcanum as a trained skill
Adaptation Cost: CTN +2, Speed +2 (+3) <-- Subject to changeBenefit: You may utilize this Adaptation on any spell which requires an attack roll and currently does not affect Incorporeal Creatures. The spell is now able to affect Incorporeal Creatures at full effect.

This enables people to choose which spells they want, while still devoting a resource to being able to handle some fringe cases in a way that makes sense for their character.

John can you move your new rule suggestion to a new thread?

Sure, it was just an example as a counterpoint.
