I want to reach out to the community for suggestions on paths for a Templar of Sarish that focus on spell casting. I feel like I have to be missing something. Every mage path seems to be locked down to Arcane Spell Casting (Elder, Eldritch, Primal, and occasionally Psionic). All the Priest paths are just that priestly. As it stands, all I see are Martial avenues for a Templar of Sarish. Anyone able to prove me wrong?

June 20, 2014 at 8:31 pm #263257AnonymousInactiveSarish has the most paths specifically available to it for any casting class.
Sarishan binder
Sorcerer Priest
order of the inner demon
Priest of Sarish
Holy Champion of SarishOath Crafter (Encali)
Order of the Ivory BowJune 20, 2014 at 8:35 pm #263258AnonymousInactiveWhat is it you want to do with your character?
In a very brief nutshell: The basic concept has always been a Paladin like Mage Knight of Sarish with emphasis going slightly towards spell casting over fighting.
June 20, 2014 at 8:42 pm #263259AnonymousInactiveWhy isn’t Holy Champion then a good choice? or Anointed Priest?

Sarishan binder Can’t get there without going Priest
Sorcerer Priest Can’t get there without going Priest
order of the inner demon Can’t get there except as Coryani, and does not fit the Paladin concept.
Priest of Sarish Can’t get there without going Priest
Holy Champion of Sarish Not a casting class. Definitely on the list though.Oath Crafter (Encali) Have to be a dwarf
Order of the Ivory Bow Have to be a Dark KinNot saying there are no paths. I am looking for something more mage like and less priest like. My character grew up in the Temple of Sarish in Blackwand. His father is a val’ Mehan Sorcerer Priest and his mother is a val’Sungha Knight of the Order of Yhrki. Due to the gorilla war with Coryan he didn’t get much mommy time, but he trained every day with the Templars and tries to live up to Knightly ideals. Sadly for his hopes and dreams Sarish has made him a potent blooded prodigy. Still he is vehemently opposed to taking orders in the Mother Church of Coryan as he views it as an extension of Coryani Imperialism.
June 20, 2014 at 9:06 pm #263262AnonymousInactiveThe Order of the Inner Demon seems a good choice for that. There is also that new Knightly Order in Milandir (they showed up in “Espionage”) which hasn’t been released for Campaign Play, but if you are playing a Kio Character that probably won’t work out for one from the Western Lands.
June 20, 2014 at 9:23 pm #263265AnonymousInactiveI have no idea what you mean “casting class”? All paths do us give you some talents and skills. Your casting comes from Arcane Spellcasting Talent. Holy Champion is these facto paladin path for any deity. It gives a few combat abilities and your casting can continue. It’s mainly for someone without prior casting but doesn’t stop you from taking it.
Most if not all deity specific paths require either anointed priest (more casting oriented) or holy
Champion ( more combat oriented). Sarish is no different.John
June 20, 2014 at 9:29 pm #263267AnonymousInactiveAs John said, there really isn’t a need for you to take a path at all. One of the beautiful things about this system is that you can describe your character however you want. Want to be a spell caster with some good melee ability? Pick up Delay Strain and a Martial Technique. With a relatively slow weapon you’ll be casting two spells to every melee attack, which sounds like it is exactly the sort of thing you are looking for with this character.
Paths give you a combination of talents and skills, but they are by no means required and they do not have to be what defines your character. My wife’s primary still doesn’t have a path, as there aren’t any paths currently available that fully fit her character concept. As anyone at our BI table will be able to tell you, her character is still very effective despite not having a path.
Don’t get too hung up on it. If there isn’t currently a path that fits what you are looking for, wait and see what is in the Blessed Lands book.

As part of the proposed and likely to be approved errata, the following change was added:
Page 295 (Errata) Sorcerer-Priests of Sarish
Under Requirements and Talents add the following (shown in Bold) Requirements: Anointed Priest of Sarish (pa) or Arcane Spell Casting (Sorcerer –Priest of Sarish) T.II (ta)
Talents: Metaphysical Understanding, Learn Spell: Remove Curse (which is learned as part of the Blood tradition), and Arcane Spell Casting: Sorcerer-Priest of SarishThis opens up more of the options. There aren’t “classes” in Arcanis. Your direction is defined by the talents, skills and paths you take. Some paths reinforce a particular concept, but you can certainly be a caster out of any of the 4 archetypes as long as one of them or a background or a Path gives you your initial access to taking the Arcane Spell Casting: Sorcerer Priest of Sarish Talent. Once that’s unlocked, you can take it every tier.
With a sweep of his hat,
Paul

June 20, 2014 at 11:35 pm #263278frootsnaxParticipantYou might look at Sword Saint. Kinda redundant with access but the skills and talents aren’t bad. Implies a piousness that isn’t directly linked to a political order. Devoted covers some of the same ground as Sword Saint. Catenary from Codex of Heroes could be a good fit too, though emphasizes melee vs. infernals. Bard – kinda a pain in the butt to meet the prereqs for, but could be an interesting choice for a PC who is also a courtier of some stripe. The spell song adaptation is interesting.
June 20, 2014 at 11:56 pm #263279AnonymousInactiveOkay, FINALLY near a computer where I can access my books!
Backgrounds – Any Martial Background, emphasis on Templar of Sarish.
Paths to look at – Sorcerer-Priest of Sarish, Annointed Priest of Sarish, Sarishan Binder, Order of the Inner Demon, War Priest (ASC: SPS should count as DSC), Sword Saint, War Mage, Devoted (best when not directly ‘priestly’), Initiate Itinerant (if you decide to go the Priest route), Templar Itinerant (same if you don’t take Templar at Background), Holy Champion
Talents to look at – Warrior Priest, Warrior Mage, Sword and Spell, Smite Infidel.
June 21, 2014 at 12:12 am #263280frootsnaxParticipantIn the old Kio naming convention Sarish was called Dimray. I don’t know if that’s that’s cannon anymore. I think not. But if you really want to differentiate yourself from the Mother Church I would think about calling myself, “a servant of Dimray (or the Lord of Magic), whom you in the North and East call Sarish.”
On the whole the Kio are not supposed to be all that zealous in their religious beliefs. Milage obviously varies by player/character. I believe there are followers of the PoM in Whon and elsewhere in the League, who do not answer to the hierarchy of the Mother Church. Hopefully the Kio book will be illuminating.
June 24, 2014 at 6:14 pm #263401AnonymousInactiveThank you all for your responses. Looks like I should wait for the errata and the next 2 books before taking any paths in Tier I.
I have some doubt that DSC is the same as ASC: SPS, but if true would certainly open up more options. Personally though it would would seem more reasonable if ASC: SPS were an acceptable substitution for ASC: Eldritch and if it were specifically confirmed that Templars and Priests of Sarish have access to Devout talents. My current reading is that they do not get such access.
Thanks,
