What are the resulting children from a lesser Kio (PC race) and val?

I’m noodling some ideas and looking for something official.

The same as Human/Val couples (unless Henry says otherwise, they’re a human sub-race).

With the added stigma of going WAY outside the social conventions.

This is the reason why marrying outside one’s
val family has a stigma – it dilutes the gene pool with
one less val child of that lineage being born.

Actually the way it works is: Kio + Val = val’Sungha (regardless of family)

Human + Kio (that would be Pure blood Kio, which as an aside is NOT a playable race) = Kio

    val’Sungha + Human = (either a val’Sungha or a normal Kio).

What it doesn’t do is specify Pure Kio or kio for the first one.

Keep in mind that (in 2011) this is when val was dominant under the previous campaign.

Since val are no longer dominant, it could be either.

Actually, that was the year the Arcanis RPG book came out so technically they no longer bred true at that point \";)\"

Here is what I know and can share…

ANY Val line that marries a Kio and produces a grey eyes baby has created a Val Sunga. Why this should be is unknown.

Non Val children of such a union is a tougher question. It is my understanding that Kio do not universally breed true. This is part of why the Kio do not usually marry outside of Kio lines. Such a Kio “half breed” would probably NOT be in line to inherit a Kio sword/artifacts…and might be better created with human PC.

The issue of breeding with Undir has a wrench thrown in it with the revelation that there are 2 different flavors of humanity (original occupants and “new” people who came with the PoM) that CAN’T interbreed. Maybe Kio can breed with both groups…but we know Kio interbreed with the PoM branch so it’s also possible to they can’t interbreed with the indigenous population. Undir predate the coming of the PoM…so if they are not thier own thing then they would be aligned with the original population.

So there is a case that the Kio and the Undir can’t interbreed.

But honestly I think this is wrong. I think Kio and Undir can interbreed given thier shared regional history. So my best guess is that the two subspecies “of humanity” can act as a bridge. More will be made clear when we get the Kio book from the kickstarter.

Per the Codex Arcanis section of the main rulebook: “The Kio were originally the result of the union between a True Kio and a human (Undir or otherwise).”

It’s not definitive (since we occasionally get incorrect information) but it seems to indicate that Kio can interbreed with any human.

Most of what I recall hearing is that the rules for breeding relate to True Kio or Pure Kio rather than Kio. Perhaps they’re identical. It’s fine if they are, but the terminology shifts from 3.5 to A:RPG has left that somewhat confused.

Biology isn’t my strongest science but, if True Kio can breed with any human (humans, Undir, Val, Kio) and produce Kio then can’t Kio breed with Kio, True Kio, humans, or Undir and produce something (since they aren’t infertile)? That’s what I remember of biology/genetics tells me (though, as I said, it’s certainly possible I’m wrong).

According to biology, Kio (both True and half-breeds), Dwarves, Dark-kin, Gnomes, Undir, Pengik, Naori, and Val are all members of the Human species or a species so close as to functionally be the same species. If not, they would not be able to mate and produce viable offsping, which we have plenty of evidence that they can. This is (biologically) why Elorii cannot breed with humans: They are far enough removed biologically as to not produce viable offspring. That said, the addition of the “Soul” and “Divine Essence” massively complicates the scientific basis of Arcanis biology, as if memory serves the reason why Elorii and Humans cannot breed has more to do with the Elorii being an elementally attuned bioconstruct race, with their souls being so far removed from the ‘natural order’ that the metaphysics just don’t work.

Interesting Fact: we know there are two ‘breeds’ of Human (Mandai and Sarosh) who apparently CANNOT mate and produce viable offspring means that the Humans that follow the Pantheon and the ‘other ones’ (Ossarions and Myrantians?) represent a different species of human entirely. That said, the Mandai humans CAN breed viable offspring from Dwarves, which to me suggests that the playable human race are actually of the same stock as the Celestial Giants rather than the Savosh humans of Arcanis. That said, since it is inferred that the reason Humans and Elorii cannot breed is because of the soul thing, the reason Mandai and Savosh cannot breed may be because the Savosh’s souls go somewhere else besides the Cauldron, which complicates the relationships there.

Either way, we know that Kio CAN and DO mate with Undir, Vals, and Humans, and that the Kio bloodline has the ability to ‘hijack’ the celestial nature of the Val bloodlines to produce the val’Sungha line. This means that they are biologically and metaphysically compatible, but there is something about them that is not quite kosher with the rest of humanity.

At GAMESTORM a few years back Henry cameras the Guest of Honor and I had the chance to talk with him about the Kio and thier history. There will be cool history stuff coming in the kickstarter book eventually that will add details and context.

The True Kio were/are a powerful “elder” race with powers very roughly on par with Celestial Giants and tall elori. I don’t think “what they can mate with” is fully determined by Biology…I think they get to write a lot of thier own rules and travel at the speed of plot.

When TK mate with a “mortal race” they produce Kio. And Kio (like Val’s) kinda but not fully breed true. The purity of thier bloodlines is very important to Kio. When the Kio stream crosses with Val stream the end result is always a Val Sungha…which rule over the other Kio.

I don’t think we know what would happen with a Kio who crossed streams with Gnomes/Celestrial Giants. Gnomes DO still breed true so my best guess in this instance is that you get a gnome. Doubt many (any) Kio have ever “tried this.”
