As a follow on to Cody’s interesting Character Ideas thread I thought I would start a thread of interesting 5e PC character concepts. As the 5e campaign guide isn’t out yet, just keep things to general ideas. Perhaps if Pedro knows what folks are thinking about he can include conversion rules for Arcanis concept ideas. Of course posting them here also gives Henry story fodder and time to veto things that aren’t fitting.
For starters just include a 5e class or class combo with a basic pc story concept. Try to think of things that work better in 5e than ARG or that would take extra work to convert.

Legion of the Mighty Oak Air Mobile Combat Engineer.
Class Druid – Wizard
Background Legionnaire
Path Equivalent : Battle Mage of the Coryani EmpireConcept makes use of combat badgers, weasels and other wild shape changes with a burrowing speed to up creation of field fortifications. At higher levels uses spells to create fortifications. Air mobility is achieved by wildshaping into size tiny animal and being carried aloft by a flying familiar. Potential complication, might wish to train the familiar not to eat its owner. Also relies on druids still being cannon….

While I cannot say one way or another if the Druid class in Arcanis will include the base Circle of the Moon, you’d pretty much have to take that angle or one of similar bent. 5e doesn’t really include ‘animal companions’ for the Druid class as it used to, meaning you’d have to take a Beast Master Ranger archetype to get your animal buddies.

Right? That would get early “aerial reconnaissance.”
May 5, 2016 at 5:31 pm #272609AnonymousInactiveToodeep is right. But the real issue is not what is possible as a druid. Rather it is if Druids will be making a reappearance in 5e Arcanis.
May 5, 2016 at 8:46 pm #272611AnonymousInactiveYes, I think wizards are essentially elder casters, sorcerers are eldritch, and clerics are priest.
That leaves two caster types from the ARG – Shaman and Psionics to shoehorn into 5E. Shaman might be a fit for Druid, though considering the “deal with a spirit” nature of a shaman I think you could make an argument for shaman transitioning over to a warlock. I prefer druid, and I’m running my shaman more like a druid (in mindset), but I can definitely see the argument.
The real question is whether there are any rules yet for psionics in 5E. If so, I haven’t seen them, but then I really only have the players handbook.
May 5, 2016 at 8:54 pm #272612AnonymousInactiveI saw warlocks as sharisans not as primal.
Mostly due to the demon familiar s they can get.May 5, 2016 at 9:26 pm #272617AnonymousInactiveYeah but the Pact of the Fiend is only one “path.” The Archfey and the “Great Old Ones” sound more like an Arcanis shaman to me. I’m okay with the wizards being the Elder casters and Sorcerers being the Eldritch casters. Clerics as Priests makes sense. I guess the Holy Champions would be modified Paladins? All speculation here till we see something official.
As for concepts I would envision a Coryani Centurion/Legionnaire thusly:
Class–Fighter
Fighting Style–Either Two Weapon fighting, Defense, or Protection (depends on whether or not the character is using a Scutum)
Martial Archetype–Battle MasterHoly Champion of Cadic/Twilight Warrior
Class–Paladin
Oath–VengeanceThese two seemed kind of obvious to me.

I see this because Eldar is supposed to be a fluid and elegant art, where magic is worked with as much as it is worked on. This is more in keeping with the Sorcerer’s ability at meta-magic. Whereas Eldritch magic is forced by rote, and much more damaging on the body.
May 7, 2016 at 1:06 am #272629AnonymousInactiveOkay I can see where you’re coming from when you put it in that context.
Of course that decision is up to PCI which is above my pay grade.
May 7, 2016 at 1:09 am #272630AnonymousInactiveOne thing that I think needs to be played up more in 5e arcane casters than the 5e rules reflect is the impact of strain. Under the old 3.5 system, you would cast your cantrips and then you are done for the day. So a caster was still held in check. In 5e, you can cast cantrips nearly continuously. Now if the whole channeling creation thing is going to hold in the 5e campaign there needs to be some real consequences from casting. It doens’t need to be a system overhall, but it does need to be there to keep wizards and sorcerers from becoming limitless wands of Firebolt.
I am not certain how to reflect this in 5e. But it would seem that if you cast too much you cast at Disadvantage. I am not certain how to gage ‘too much’ without given the GM absolute fiat over casters. If someone has an elegant way to bring the concept of strain to 5e without nerfing casters excessively I’d love to hear it for home game usage.
Maybe a condition “STRAINED FROM CASTING” can be added to the 5e rollout. But I have no idea what that condition might look like. Perhaps if you cast more than 1/2 your level in spell levels in succession then you cast at disadvantage. But to me, that seems a bit crunchy for 5e.
May 7, 2016 at 2:36 am #272632AnonymousInactiveI see nothing wrong with unlimited use of Firebolt….

Whereas I thought it was clear from 3.5 days that the Sorcerer King had more interest in sorcerers. Sure, he took wizards, but understanding where sorcerers got there magic was his main gig. And that primarily involves him gathering all the eldritch casters, not Eldar, so it seems mostly like Eldritch=Sorcerer. Plus there is the entire “nearly immortal gets to study so much” idea that goes along with Eldar=Wizard.
May 7, 2016 at 6:44 am #272635frootsnaxParticipantThere are lots of “conversion” elements that will create challenges.
One of the Nice things about the modular nature of the classes in 5e is that it will make things easier to create Arcanis specific takes on the D&D classes. e.g.: Legionaire or Gladiator packages for fighters.
Similarly I see an opportunity to use feats for Val and elorii Bloodline Powers.
Splitting sorcerers and wizards into elder and eldritch is an interesting thought. While that would be a big break from what’s come before I like the idea.
On the other hand some things are going to be apples and oranges. What represents primal casts in the game? Warlocks? Druids? … Even more of concern – what to do about psionics? The were/are a LOT of psion casters in the old campaign and the current campaign. As has already been noted, there is no ready fit for psions in 5e. What to do? You might rename sorcerers as psionts … both are hereditary magic based on how you were born. But I don’t think many people will see that as a good fit (I don’t think it’s a good fit, I just don’t see anything better). Will PCI invent a new psion class?
I also think it’s going to be harder to do dual system stats than people have given it credit for. A:RPG essentially has n resource management. D&D has a lot of resource management. I really want to see how that is juggled in the BI this year. A similar amount of encounters might leave A:RPG characters in good shape since they recover after (almost) every fight. On the other hand it could grind 5E characters into the dirt since healing and power recovery is much harder. I’m sure the numbers guys are working on it…it seems like it could be a big challenge.
May 7, 2016 at 7:08 pm #272638AnonymousInactiveActually, WotC has already done a 5e Psion as part of their Unearthed Arcana.
