Just checking, as I’m working on my tentative schedule for GenCon – are there any PCI events planned for the convention? Just curious if any are planned, as I did not see any in the event catalog.

May 13, 2016 at 9:09 pm #272669drafitParticipantHello,
Due to Gen Con’s regulations, we’re unable to provide any Arcanis, Witch Hunter or Rotted Capes events this yea.
Sorry, gentlemen.
May 13, 2016 at 11:01 pm #272671AnonymousInactiveAs I understand it,it is the way GenCon sets things up. If PCI sponsors an event(s), then GenCon will not cover housing, badge costs, etc at all. It is up to PCI to cover. If a private game club sets up games, GenCon will REIMBURSE costs based on participation. When I looked into it a few years ago, it essentially meant a judge would need to fork over $$$ to GenCon/hotel, practically iron man the con, and hope tables would fill so as to get reimbursed the cash they put in. The system is fine if you are a major company/campaign…..little guys, not so much.
Of course, based on my experiences last year, GenCon is becoming less and less about playing games. Mostly cosplay and an ocean of humanity packing into a dealer hall like sardines. I would go to help out PCI, but IMHO paying for overpriced hotel and parking to mill around at a snails pace while having thousands of people violate my personal space is not my idea of fun.

Could not have said it better myself. Crowds and the expense are the main reasons I stopped going. If I had more vacation time I would probably go to some more local cons instead. Right now its Arcanicon, Origins and maybe Ucon.

Same here. I figure that GenCon generally costs twice as much as Origins and is not as long. I go to cons to play games (I usually only spend a few hours in the dealers hall – longer at GenCon than Origins just because the GenCon dealers hall is quite a bit larger). Even at Origins, I avoid the dealers hall on Saturday when it is the most crowded.

But I kept Thursday open to check everything out. Plus the mornings are free as well. But the last couple of times I went to GenCon the dealer’s room was a pain to move through and I hear it’s only gotten worse. Plus as I’ve gotten older my tolerance of gamer funk has shrunk to nearly zero.
