As I am sure some of you know, one of the major timeline issues for publishing mods and BI’s (especially the BI’s) is the need to make up 3 or more different sets of statblocks to include the widest possible range of player characters. However, I’m ever more rarely seeing lower Tier characters whenever I run (not never, but more rarely), which makes me wonder just what is the more accurate range of player characters currently active in Arcanis?

As of as close to the publication of this post as possible, what Tiers are your ACTIVE characters (even roughly)? If possible, if you know the ranges of players in your group(s) that are not active on the forums, could you please post this information?

For reference, both my wife and I are now over Tier 3, with her being Tier 3.2 and me being 3.3 as I recall. Our secondary characters are all in the Tier 1 range, but are rarely played.

My main character Tiers are listed in my signature block. I have a range of secondary character but none are above 1.6. Right now we are running through the Crusade arc with a new player and have some characters as low as 1.2. To be honest I’m not in a race to get to Tier 5, although there’s a few I like to get to Tier 2. At this point I want to play the character who will enjoy the mod the most, who is the best fit for the table, and can actively contribute to the success of the mission. That’s one of the reasons i have multiple characters. As for our play group locally they have fewer characters than me but the range is similar. Our highest are 2.8

So would you say that you would still be actively playing Tier 1.5 characters in modern adventures? I ask because if we can remove an entire tier of stats that need to be made because those characters are not seeing active play, we can possibly streamline the mod release procedure.

I keep my signature block up to date with my character tiers, all are in T2 now. During the spring I was running a group of new players, all in low T1…but the plan was to run them through all the early stuff so they were high tier to play the new modules.

I doubt there are many people playing the new modules at low tier.

I would say that unless we offer a bump cert we should always have a module go down to 1.5 – we need to keep this game as open to new players as possible, and to have any of the limited number of new modules that come out unplayable by someone new to the campaign due to it not going low enough… Is not the message we want to be sending. Remember, getting replays of older modules is difficult, so most new players are going to be coming in playing the newer modules first, because those are the tables that can be formed most readily and those are the ones played at conventions.

I agree completely on the bump cert.

Locally we are mixed. Tukufu & Marcus are 3.3/3.4. But have some more casual players who are in the 1.8 to 1.9 ball park. Mostly a combination of (a) not wanting to take the 1.5 cert and forgoing the early mods, (b) having two primary characters that split mods and/or (c) only making some of the games. If you don’t make Origins and Arcaniscon for the specials then you are obviously going to be somewhat lower too…

Most of Portland’s PCs are currently 2.something. That includes my secondary character Szymon who is 2.3.

My characters are 3.1 (Ss’kethis), 1.7 (G’hyu’theh), and 1.2 (Eryk). I plan to play G’hyu’thyh more once the Kio book is out. Eryk is (currently at least) only going through the Crusade mods on myth-weavers.

My group is all around 1.6 but most will probably never go to a con or play Arcanis outside of my group. One will sometimes and she played two mods at Origins (and was supposed to play a third). She might have played in the BI but it overlapped with the D&D special.

I agree that if mods are not going to be statted for 1.5 then there must be a level-up cert to whatever the new “low” is.

Maybe related question: is the campaign at all interested in modules that cap at or bellow Tier 3. I don’t currently have any on a burner but I did once have an idea for a wilderness-esque adventure called the Wolves of Almeric where PCs have to (surprise) hunt down Wolves. Probably not a task that get handed out to Tier 3 or higher heroes.

This came up elsewhere and requires a Campaign decision (very soon).

Here down under the core group I run (deluge, southernskies etc) are sitting between 1.7 and 2.1. A number of us don’t run all games first with the primary as we tend to match game to character so we don’t progress at the highest rate.

We also have a couple of members of the primary group that cant make every game and are below the curve of plot.

Finally we often have spots filled my new or irregular players

(like my daughter who is only 1.3-side note: those who were part of the old 3.5 campaign may remember when I announced Grace was born. She will be 11 in October)

The irregular players are often less than 1.5 because that are planning to jump between crusader and destroyer games so have not used the cert to tier up (plus if you have played a few crusader games, you can loose a lot of stuff by applying the cert. 2gp does not cover loss of runes, sarishan steel weapons, etc.)

All that being said, we are small fish own here in a big pond, so our situation is somewhat unique.

I haven’t played in a couple of years now, so I’m definitely behind at 2.4. I’m running a group through adventures to hopefully catch up in time for us to get to next year’s Origins somewhere near the common level range. My players are 1.7 currently.

My primary is at 3.3, and my secondary at 2.2. Certainly I want there to continue to be mods with High Tier stats available.

But the home game (that I generally GM) is a mixed bag. We’ve got a new Arcanis player starting (1.5), another recent addition (1.7), others playing their secondaries (from 1.9 to 2.4), plus the occasional one playing a primary (2.5 to 2.10). We generally play the Low Tier, once in a while adding a High Tier threat to make sure it’s a challenge.

So, we really need to have Low Tier stats available, given a group averaging between 1.9 and 2.1 typically.

In my opinion, for Arcanis to continue, it needs to attract new players. So we need mods that new players with new PCs can play. The current entry tier for PCs is 1.5. So, Low Tier stats in mods are absolutely needed. And this includes the new mods — otherwise, the new players won’t have enough players for a table, since the experienced players have already played the old mods with both primaries and secondaries.

I support the idea of creating a new leveling cert, bringing in new PCs somewhere in Tier 2. That would reduce the need for Low Tier stats, while still allowing new players to join.

    My own PCs:
    3.2, 1.7, 1.6, 1.5

Characters in the home campaign I GM:
    1.3, 1.2, 1.2, 1.2, 1.1

    My characters that I have are: 3.1, 2.6, 2.1ish, and 1.6

All the players local to Colorado have their primaries range from 2.7 to 3.2, but we have found that it helpful to have both the Mid-Tier and High Tier stats available to be able to provide a good challenge without having to make up changes to the stats on the fly as much.
