So I just got this really cool mini…. It is a necomancer being carried around on a wingback fireside chair by four zombies. It came with an awesome paint job, and I could not pass it up.

Now for the question of how to bring such Coryani val Mordane style to a Arcanis 5e game near you comes up. After reaching for the Cheezewiz I have determined that a lvl 6 Wizard Necromancer can in fact ride through town on the backs of four zombies (social implications and harvester notices aside). Question is, can I use the Mounted Combat Feet when doing so?

((I’ve tried to behave myself of late, but hey Nitro val Abebi’s trip through the gate got me thinking)).

Please see rules for using a chariot… \"\"

Hmmm… PHB doesn’t cover chariots as such; everything is just considered a ‘mount’.

Mounted Combat uses Wisdom (Animal Handling). From previous 3.5 conversions, using a chariot will be Dexterity (Animal Handling).

However, in your case, Dexterity (Arcana) seems like a nice house rule (to keep your balance while using the Bonus Action to control your undead ‘mount’).

Aside from the smell, if you dress the zombies in full-plate or equivalent, it may be possible to minimize notice from the populace.

:edit: aha! Proficiency in a vehicle gives you a bonus (pg.135), so Dexterity (Proficiency: Chariot) when using Mounted Combat rules.

I said I was trying to behave myself…… I never promised to actually behave myself. Only to try.

I have that mini. Love Malifaux’s stuff. Always wanted to Write an encounter in a module while the PCs were making camp and see it going by at night. Chase it down? Or leave well enough alone.

PS – you do know that guy sitting in the chair is essentially a much right?

Ok so I assume by the chariot reference that I can’t use mounted combat while riding atop my zombie escort. Follow up questions. Do I get cover from the wing back chair? Do I get higher ground advantages for being a head above the rest of the party? Finally, do my zombies smell of stinky cheese?

Now for tactics. Does anyone, save perhaps my fellow adventuring party, object to my casting of levitate on the chair, and dropping a stinking cloud below???

From my reading of the PHB, chariots are considered ‘mounts’ for combat and use the same rules.
(A zombie-carried palanquin seems to meet the intent of a chariot, thus a mount).

Cover; no (its just a ‘really big saddle’)

Higher ground; yes (as long as your target is smaller than your mount!)

Smell; varies based on the mould, fungi and level of decomposition of the zombies.

Stinking cloud; by the rules you would still be affected as the cloud touches the ‘squares’ you occupy. Levitating 4 zombies and the palanquin would be required first.
However, the problem with levitate is ‘one creature or object’. A chariot (or palanquin) is technically 5 separate creatures/objects, so would fail as a group.
Possible get around it by levitating the palanquin and leaving the zombies on the ground to wait for your return. \"\"
Stinking cloud is a 20’r sphere, so you’re going to need quite a bit of height.

One side note; as your zombies are acting as a non-independent ‘mount’, they only get to use the Dash, Disengage and Dodge actions. With no hands free, getting them to make unarmed attacks (kicking your enemies…) isn’t going to do a lot.

    Yes?

I mean…I don’t have any good rules based arguments. It sounds at least sorta legal if you leave the zombies behind. And in fact the odds of me ever judging a 5e module in the mid west is pretty low. So maybe I should drink my coffee and shut my mouth. Still…

Please? Can I just raise my hand now and lodge an objection? A strong objection? Maybe I can raise both hands?

(My lawyers will be getting back to you with fine print.) \":P\"

Yes Eric. Please raise both hands. As I have a military background, I will gladly and graciously accept your surrender.

LET IT BE PROCLAIMED THOUGHOUT THE LAND THAT THERE SHALL BE PEACE ON THESE FORUMS! A CEASE FIRE SHALL COMMENCE IMMEDIATELY AS ERIC GORMAN HAS SURRENDERED TO THE SON OF OOZE JUMPER!!! MAY THE ZOMBIES RULE!!!

    Dang.

Not only would I take falling damage. So would my chair.

Dang. Eric Gorman must have bought off the 5e writers during the DNDNext playtest. Both Levitate and Stinking Cloud require Concentration. So unless Pedro has some sort of weird rule that bypasses the concentration rules in the works…. My image of floating around above a stinking cloud while my zombie minions tear the mobs to shreds will not work. Bummer….

    New Feat:

    Extra Concentration
The caster may expend their Standard Action to maintain concentration on an additional spell.
