Just a few questions about the animal companion:

Does the companion require the PC’s action to command or can it act 100% separately, as if its another player?

The description says it is proficient in all saving throws and a separate line says to add your proficiency bonus to the animal’s saves. I’m assuming this just means only add proficiency once?

And then about the sacred spear order in general:
By gaining the fighting styles based on weapons used as a sacred spear order feature, i would assume these styles would not stack with the ones chosen as the hc class feature? Ex: knife fighter class feature and order feature would not stack for +4 to damage.

I’m no one official but i think the issues are pretty clear.

To answer your question about your companion I think its pretty clear your companion is its own unit and does not require you to spend actions to command. The text says:

Your companion obeys your commands as best it can. It rolls for initiative like any other creature, but you determine its action, decisions, attitudes, and so on. If you are incapacitated or absent, your companion acts on its own..

The emphasis is mine. Its a separate creature. If you needed to spend reactions or bonus actions to make it do stuff then I feel confident the text would have said so. Enjoy your (eventually shockingly tough) tomcat.

I also think that your other question (about stacking) is a no. When you gain the tools of the trade feature you “gain additional fighting styles unique to this order.” Since it specifically says its a fighting style you can’t double up. Use you HC fighting style to pick something else.

    Hope that helps!

Correct, the things in the original Beastmaster class in the core was that your animal companion took up your actions to act. We fixed that.

Correct they are fighting styles unique to the order.. giving you additional options, they don’t stack.

As for your animal companions saving throws, they don’t stack. Choose the best one. (yours)

Thanks for the clarifications! Lastly one other question has come up related to the companion:

Would it be allowed for a player to have any CR 1/8 beast as a companion if it fits the flavor of the character, or are they strictly limited to mastiffs and tomcats?

    That’s a harder question.

I’m no one official but I feel pretty confident saying in the context of a Living Campaign you get what the text says you get barring a special cert. So no, you can’t go shopping for any CR 1/8 creature.

That said, If you decide to “reskin” your stats (for a tomcat or mastiff) as something else I doubt many (any?) GMs would have an issue with that….As long as it fits the concept of the HC class. Your animal companion is supposed to help you hunt rats in the sewers of cities, so something that doesn’t eat/hunt rats (or would cause trouble just by being in a city) wouldn’t really be appropriate. Big snake? Okay, maybe. Wild gazelles or hyenas? Hard no.

    My opinion.
