A hypothetical question came up in a recent session. A player who has a champion fighter with a lightning rune attached to a weapon rolls a 19 which is a crit for his fighter, but the text on the rune says he has to roll a 20 to get the additional damage.

Since that is a class feature could he get the extra rune damage on a successful critical attack roll, 19 or 20.

My (completely unofficial) answer would be to apply the class ability to the rune as well as the weapon. The rune becomes a part of the weapon when it is applied to the weapon. Doesn’t make a ton of sense to have two different critical hit ranges on a single attack.

    Don’t have rules handy, but. . .

It is all about wording. If the rune says it acts on a 20 and not a crit, and if the class ability says it changes the crit range, those are not equvalent rules. While a 20 is normally a crit if the rune doesn’t use that word you can’t just assume they are equvalent. Therefore the class ability does not change when the rune activates.
