As a general campaign question, how important will knowing multiple languages be? Should we assume that English will be the default language as far as prevalence?

If you aren't from England, then it becomes very important, since you only get your native language for free :) From the 4 adventures I've played so far, English has been the 'common' tongue but it hasn't meant that you have to speak it fluently.

Don't forget you get your Education in Language ranks at creation (or deferred as 'unused ranks' until needed) as well (twice that for Apostles of the New Dawn).

Oops I'd forgotten that :)

This season's Revelations events are set against the backdrop of England and the Isles, so I would expect English to be the default "common" language.

My home game has no such luxuries. Even though it kicked off on the border of France and the Holy Roman Empire, only two of the PCs speak German. They have a wide collection of languages amongst them, though English, French and Latin are shared by a good chunk of the group. My players are good sports about it though, and have no problem trusting one member of the party to be a translator when necessary. Plus, I intend to feature some far reaching adventures so soon enough distant ports of call will be calling, so language barriers are a feature of the game.

If I had wanted to pre-empt all of that, I could have just given everyone German for free at the beginning of play. But the language barrier makes for a nice obstacle and challenge.

In the past it has generally been advised that knowing English and/or Dutch was the way to go as those are the languages of trade during that time.
