We played the first half of HP2-03 on Roll20 tonight and a few questions came up regarding Scene 3…
What is the attack speed of the Spawn of Tzizhet? It is listed as 0. Does that mean it does an automatic attack when it moves (eg speed 2 or 3 depending if it wants to provoke)? If that’s how it works, it dishes out an insane amount of damage.
Does the damage bypass natural AR? Given that it doesn’t specify “worn”, I assume so. However, how/why would Lash and Sting damage bypass natural AR? As a murder of tiny critters, they could easily get under worn armor (but that’s impossible for natural armor).
April 25, 2015 at 4:39 am #267508AnonymousInactiveDon’t have mod handy, but if the Spawn is a swarm/murder than yes you take damage if you share a square with it in it’s turn.
April 25, 2015 at 6:01 am #267510AnonymousInactiveThat seems insane. That’s likely 1d10+4 damage bypassing all (or at least worn) AR every 2 ticks to likely 4 party members (2 per swarm since they can “deform” to any contiguous 4 squares).
Looking at the swarm characteristics, it says Natural AR does apply to the damage. However, the Spawn of Tzizhet just says “bypass AR” (but doesn’t seem to have a traits that would grant this). Is it supposed to be “bypass worn AR” or are the Spawn supposed to bypass all AR?

I personally would assume natural AR helps. And I wouldn’t double the swarms up…that is to say the PCs should only be eating the damage once per action. Unless the PCs are having an easy time of it. Not impossible with area effects and bludgeoning sweeping strikes.Scare the PCs….but you hopefully want them to survive for more fun in later rounds.
April 25, 2015 at 2:01 pm #267515AnonymousInactiveMy character had Castigate (which, despite what everyone thinks, targets animals and mindless vermin just fine) and Elemental Bolt, so the fight wasn’t too bad. Without an AOE, however, it becomes MUCH harder
April 25, 2015 at 2:07 pm #267516AnonymousInactiveJust to be clear this was not the last fight at the end with boss monster right? Because if it was I have questions about that.

Just to clarify, I was running it with the damage occurring every 4 ticks, not 2. Steve is correct, however, the module does not specify an attack speed (that I could find) or state that NAR applies to the damage.

Natural Armor does not protect (i.e. apply) against these creatures attacks.
April 25, 2015 at 4:16 pm #267520AnonymousInactiveNatural Armor does not protect (i.e. apply) against these creatures attacks.
Thanks for the clarification.
Out of curiosity, what is the attack supposed to be that it bypasses NAR?
If NAR does not apply, I’d suggest changing the name of the attack. “Lash and Sting” sounds like a typical insect swarm attack (where NAR would definitely logically apply).
April 25, 2015 at 4:25 pm #267521AnonymousInactiveIt doesn’t specifically state it in this combat, but there is a related enemy who deals Acid damage (and it states there that it bypasses all AR), so that may be the case.

And I appreciate it. The encounter was bad at every 4 ticks.
Every 2 ticks would have been insane. No attack roll and an average (not including explosions) damage of 9.5 gives 4.75 dpt per target (so likely 9.5 or 14.25 dpt total per swarm) which is much higher than any character can get (almost 3x higher iirc). If we go with the “expected” 9.5 dpt per swarm (so 19 dpt total) and look at healing – Diminish Fatigue heals on average 10-11 every 7 ticks (4 speed, 3 strain) which equates to roughly 1.5 hpt – let’s be generous and say 4 people can cast it (or other heals) at 2 hpt – that’s likely 11 dpt unhealed so about every 6 ticks enough damage is going unhealed to drop a character (likely spread out so nobody drops that quickly). Add in damage die explosion and the damage gets even worse.
April 25, 2015 at 4:37 pm #267523AnonymousInactiveDon’t forget the gritty rule, beat fortitude defense and a wound. Not hard to get with some of the opponents we’ve been facing.
April 25, 2015 at 5:01 pm #267525AnonymousInactiveYep. I took 1 wound last night (30 damage from these swarms) and kept thinking it was likely that I would get another one. I spent almost the entire 45 minutes getting damaged by the swarm (at the every 4 ticks Akira mentioned).

Correct – the Spawns of Tzizhet all drip acids from their tendrils, thus why it’s called Lash (tendrils) and Sting (Acid).

And welcome to a Battle Interactive.
These are meant to be tougher than normal battles and the threat of death is meant to be there. However, as far as I know, no one died at the BI and I believe, no one did at your either. So at the end of the day, the encounters did what they were suppose to do: create a tough challenge for your Heroes.
Take heart however, this was the last BI released for home play.
