This Origins I had the privilege of playing a special table from the Forged in Magic Kickstarter called overdue. The contents of the module directly impact the family. All of this is an OOC summary of the parts pertinent to us.

    1) INTRO: Tukufu was approached by a pair of people who had a small crystal orb that was etched with an eye. They had a grievance against the Legion of the Black Sun and allegedly secured a magical item that the Legion had disposed off (the eye). After experimentation our party first saw visions of a room with friezes of Nierites spearing, slashing and burning people (presumably the Val C). Then our clairvoyance passed out of the room and revealed we were in the Sea of Grass. The place where Hunoi slaves come from.

    2) We went to the sea of grass and discovered that there was a half Century of the (Undead) Legion of the Black Sun. The Legion was there securing amphorae of oil and heading in into the grass. We also headed into the grass toward the site avoiding the Legion. We interacted with the “simple” Hunoi and learned their language was based (ultimately) on Ancient Altherian. Surprising since they worship Lyssandra (the Green Moon), Belisarda & Nayal (the Night Sky). And they had some collective if dim knowledge of the Val Cessari (perhaps laced with fear).

    3) The Black Sun beat us to an ancient and decrepit fortress at the location predicted by the crystal eye. We managed to sneak inside without their knowing. Eventually we found an unusual basement filled with crystal cylinders. Most of the cylinders seemed to have burned out but a few could be put against your head which would trigger a stored memory. Collectively these crystals unveiled the core of the Val Cessari history we got with our special characters. There was also a Gold Mask with the stored personality/intellect of Piopel Hunak, a vassal of the val’Cessari. The mask did not discover Tukufu was a Val C because he did not put it on during the adventure. The Hunak vassals apparently have been stripped of higher cognitive function and become the Hunoi. There were 2 important differences in their history and our history however: (A) the Imperium Legion of the Black Sun was the primary instrument of wiping out knowledge of the Val Cessari…and their undead incarnation is still going strong even today. (B) Xiothun val’Cessari was secretly a brilliant general during the wars with the Ossarion Empire but was somehow outed. His Legions were ready to fight the rest of the Imperium on his behalf, but to stop internal fighting & needless bloodshed he instead committed ritual suicide after proclaiming that he was the very last Val Cessari.

The additional people who now know of us are: “Comma” Val Mehan (David Thomas Chappel), Marcus Val Mehan (Stephen Raymond), Belthazor Val Mehen (Paul Baughman), Kavaris (Ken McRowe), and Ceres Val Dellenovs (Liz Horn). The Black Sun burned the library to the ground destroying everything we didn’t pinch but never knew we were there or removed items from the fortress. Despite the Bloodwar revelations they collectively seem to think the val C are “okay.”

    4) Again OOC…on the way home Tukufu met a Valinor. The others didn’t see it or know of Tukufu’s interaction. T learned four additional things: (A) effectively the Patriarch of our family is Merric Val Cessai. (B) there is a “real” cache with our most important treasures and history …”out there” … waiting for us to rediscover. (C) the cache that we found in Overdue was deliberately sacrificed to lull the Legion of the Black Sun into thinking it had gotten our last repository of lore. (D) our days of being invisible are coming to an end…though it remains to be seen if our reemergence will be for good or for for ill…for the family and for civilization.

All of the above is OOC knowledge. Tukufu would freely share this IC with any family member who contacted him. In the several years of this campaign I have never sat down at a table with another val C … until the special last round of the BI this year. Tukufu would welcome contact with distant cousins.

I wonder if this other font of val’Cessari knowledge is the Temple of the Hidden Star.

Also, I wonder if there would be interest (and if people have time) in the organisation of a Roll20 val’cessari table for a mod?

Also suggests that the legion of the black sun is a val’emmen legion not a val’virdan one.

    Thanks Eric.

Very interesting. At least we know which side of the coming war to choose! The rest of those poor, unenlightened val are doomed to eternal torment. \"\"

Astra hasn’t been much of a scholar/writer, but I should do a few letters. Locally we’ve only done the first couple of Blessed Land hardpoints and are about to hit the family adventures (according to the blurbs).

Taffy and I are active on Mythweavers if you want to join us there for a game or two.

    ***
    val’Emmen… don’t I know a val’Emmen that might need to be killed… \"\"

The Legion of the Black Sun is a Virdan Legion. They escaped the Virdan purge by becoming the instrument of erasing the Val Cessari from history. This is clear in the four pages of history we were all given.

I don’t know where the hidden cache is but my guess is DZV. Temple of the Hidden Star is also an interesting possibility. There is an interesting Easter Egg for us in the mod “The Price of Honor” it might have bearing on the cache…or might not.

There might be some differences in the texts; my PDF is 5 1/4 pages of backstory before the rules.

It doesn’t mention anything about the Legion of the Black Sun. Only that the val’Virdan were enslaved by the val’Eman.

Hmmm… the spelling of val’Eman is different to the modern spelling of val’Emmen too. (probably a typo…)

The two sets of histories are 85%+ congruent. But there are some differences. I haven’t had the chance to really go through them paragraph by paragraph.

    Thanks Tukufu

    That is very interesting.

    1) was the Valinor the 3rd Eye? (Or even confirmed as a Valinor of Lianni
    2) did it say our time of being invisible is coming up to an end, or was this an instruction for us to directly do?

    1) The Valinor is almost certainly of Lianni & female. The story is a little bit complicated. But the party was walking through the sea of grass and met a “little girl” with a copper bracelet that had the Val C eye symbol. She saved us from the invisible “stalkers” that seem to guard the Hunoi. And she seemed somewhat less “simple” than the others and guided us to a village. She wasn’t at the village when we got there but showed up later. At the end, on the way out she revealed herself again. While she talked to the others in girl form she also simultaneously manifested as a valinor to Tukufu and “info dumped.” She did not obviously have a third eye. But Lianni probably doesn’t have that many valinor running around in the world…

    2) there were no direct instructions. beyond an injunction not to give in to despair (because the library/stronghold had been destroyed). It was said that our time of being invisible is coming to an end. I think that’s going to happen no matter what we do. But we have not been directly commanded to act.

Sorry, I never answered this. Yes I would play an online table with other “cousins” even if we had to juggle the time difference between down under & the US West Coast. Tukufu has currently played everything so it would have to be a new mod…

I’ll check the calendar for August. Timezone wise, Aus is effectively a day ahead, so:
Fri pm US = Sat morning Australia.

No public holidays locally for a few months at this point.

Nice public conclusion to the story.

“I know *nothink*, I see *nothink*, we found *nothink*”…

It’s hard to know what and how to share.

As a player my first impulse is to share everything. But I don’t want to aggravate anyone on this list by prematurely spilling the beans. And now there are discussions with the six of us who played the table with what to share too…and then there is the issue that Tukufu wouldn’t risk drawing the direct ire of the Legion of the Black Sun. It gets a little complicated trying to play nice with everybody.

Glad you liked how I squared the circles.

Anyone have any ideas what the rhymes mean?
