Reading the Pound of Flesh thread reminded me of a question I’ve had for a while.

When making AOE attacks in Arcanis (whether from spell of maneuver or whatever), do you roll once to-hit and compare it to all targets or do you roll once per target? Once you hit, do you roll once for damage on all targets or do you roll damage separately per target?

    ARPG 347

Area Attack Rolls: Attacks against Targets within an Area are handled by a single attack roll; the result of that roll is then compared to the Defense of all Targets within the affected Area. At first, this may seem like an all or nothing proposition, but it’s not as you will see below in the section on Area Damage.

Damage could be read either way, I have always read it as one damage roll also (for speeds sake if nothing else) but at WF last weekend i looked again and decided your mileage may vary from judge to judge

Thanks. That’s how I’ve been playing it and thought I’d read that somewhere but couldn’t find it last time I went to look and occasionally I’ve seen things stated on the forum that implied (at least to me) that you roll to-hit each target.

For speed and efficiency, I’ve always done it 1 Attack / 1 Damage roll.

    Should be 1 roll……

While in some situations the chronicler may let you roll against every target (when faced with a TPK for example)

pedro, 1 roll to hit AND one roll to damage?

Just in general, can you ever roll 1 attack roll but roll multiple damage rolls?

John, off the top of my head the way AOE spells reads you could read it Either way (and while I come down firmly on the side of one damage roll others don’t)

spells are the only way i can think of that do AOE damage, i cant think of a technique that hits multiple targets and does not specify that separate attack rolls are needed

Fair enough. I think it could be a little ambiguous, but when I’ve always extrapolated from the very clear “1 attack roll” to be a corresponding “1 damage roll” since creatures (only than minions) still take damage on a miss. It seemed odd for me to roll damage for creatures individually from a blast of fire, etc.

I think that too but I corrected someone, and then looked up the rule and found it wasn’t clear enough for me to correct them with.. so whty im still asking for a clear statement.

Play slows down a lot if you roll individually for all targets within an AoE (as opposed to a spell that specifically targets multiple individuals).

But but, this one AOE attack on page 270 says I have to make an individual roll for each hit.

One of the few that I’ve seen is on page 388 (Farstrike) but you’re making weapon attacks. There may be a few others out there that overrule the specific.

If you roll 1 Attack / 1 Damage, you do the 1/2 damage on a miss (other than minions) and if you roll multiple Attacks / multiple Damages, there’s no 1/2 damage on a miss.

I would consider whirlwind an AoE attack. If my main character survives to tier 3, he will be performing a whirlwind with 10′ radius from a 10′ center, 28 squares in range. So there is a consideration for alternative for the melee attack.

John is correct here.. that spell is an acceptation to the rule, which is why it’s called out in that specific spell
