I’m trying to plan a long overdue visit to my mom in spring 2017. Non-refundable plane tickets need to be bought and vacation time carved out (with 5 days already committed to Origins). Is there going to one next year? I would assume so but it would be nice to get some sort of tentative confirmation from those planning it. I have a lot of fun at that con but if for whatever reason it’s not going to happen that’s two to three days of vacation time I can save. Thanks!

I too am interested in when ArcaniCon ’17 is going to be.

That is an interesting question. It is being worked on. We were shooting for “same bat-time same bat-channel”. Unfortunately, the hotel we have been attending is undergoing renovations and they won’t wave fees that had previously been waved….which raises the costs IMMENSLY”. So, we are shopping around sites (both in and out of Chicago) and we are trying to be a little flexible for dates to get a decent deal.

Just going to toss this out there, with the exchange rate being what it is, it would be pretty cheap to have Arcanicon in Canada this year \";)\"

I already suggested Florida but that seems to be an unpopular opinion for people who live anywhere else, or like sanity.

With the Canadian exchange rate, Windsor does sound like it could be a great idea.

The only problem I have with Canada is I don’t have a passport and can’t really afford to divert money to pay for one. It’s kind of a Catch-22, I pay for a passport using money that I would need to pay for the con…(gas, food, hotel etc.)… \":(\"

Come on, I hear Edmonton is. . . sorry, I can’t say it is nice that time of year. It just isn’t true.

Since I fly there anyway, I am totally okay with any hub-type airport, but I know that a large number of people who attend only do so because it is driveable, which limits us to the Midwestern USA for the most part.

Trust me Cody if I could afford it I would jump at the chance to visit your fair country. But not necessarily to spend the whole time there gaming. I’d much rather check out Quebec, Acadia (sorry I can’t call it Nova Scotia–my ancestors came from there), and British Columbia. Heck I could easily spend a couple of weeks seeing what I want to see in Canada! \":-)\"

But gaming I need to do on the cheap at present. \":(\"

Hopefully Matt and crew can find a venue we can all live with.

Hey, don’t get me wrong! I’d gladly go to Vegas or Seattle or Orlando for a Con. It’s about the same price for me (or, for Vegas, much less) to go there than Chicago or Detroit. I would be 100% okay with Vegas, since already Amanda and I are looking at a CA$1,500 investment to go, and Vegas we could cut that back by at least 25%!

You only need a passport if you are flying. If you are traveling by land (car, bus, train) you only need your birth certificate, green card, or naturalization certificate.

Well here’s the rub. I’ve been looking at flights to go home to see my mother. While the prices may be cheap to some they’re not to me. So likely flying to Canada is out of the question and driving would eat up too much of my very limited vacation time. Now if I save up for an entire year I might be able to afford it, but half of my tax return goes to cover Origins. The rest usually gets eaten up by bills and unexpected expenses.

Also last time I checked passports cost over a hundred dollars.

Don’t get me wrong I would love to visit Canada, but unless I win the lottery (which I don’t play) or have rich relatives shower me with money (none of my relatives are rich) trip to Canada is not feasible. \":(\"

You say that like Canada isn’t as close as much of the US. You could make Windsor as easily as Detroit (even if it just meant flying into Detroit and crossing to windsor), right?

Though of course, that involves car rental or ride arrangements, while having the con at a hotel close enough to an airport to allow for a shuttle arrangement probably always works best for air travelers.

I get two weeks of vacation a year. Half of that is going to Origins. One day I allocate to Arcanicon, maybe more if work schedules get wonky. I like to have some for Ucon as well. So any time eaten up by travelling (as in driving) is time I don’t have to game. My job doesn’t pay that well so money for flying means saving up a whole year and hoping no unexpected expenses crop up. And they usually do. That and I really hate paying the cost of flying anymore. What is pocket change to some is a lot of money to me.

It’s not that I can’t go to Canada but the time and money laid out usually have to go to other things.

Anyhow I think we’ve beaten this horse to death. Can we move on?

On a different note any updates on getting a new venue for the con?
