Guardian’s Blessings
stuff, then
Originally a blessing of Hurrian, every established temple
has developed their own version of this useful cant.I thought this was exactly the kind of stuff churches couldn’t do? They developed their own spells? I thought that cants were handed down by their god and never, ever changed?

You’re being too literal. What this means is that each of the Temples (Hurian’s, Nier’s, Illiir;s, Saulwe’s, etc) have a version of this spell.
I didn’t think it was a good use of the space in an already huge book to retype what is basically the same spell twelve times.

It is only after the First Imperium fell that different sects, Temples, and Churches to different Gods developed their own distinct groups. Some of these Temples retained some of these cants (often the ones most specific to their patron God), while others fell out of favour. Some cants (like Diminish Fatigue) is universally useful so it remained ‘on the books’ for every major temple/sect. In terms of Guardian’s Blessing, while Hurrian may have passed the Cant down to mankind, it doesn’t mean that knowledge of the cant itself was kept secret.
In the current setting, the Deity tradition represents the cant-knowledge which remains ‘unique’ to a particular sect. While a Hurrianite and an Ansharan would both know Diminish Fatigue, the Hurrianite would be loathe to share Lightning Strike with an ‘unbeliever’.
