greetings,
If you recast emphatic link upon a target already under the effect of an emphatic link you simply re-fresh the the spells duration (which is 24 hours)
in all cases, the fresh casting overrides the previous casting, and yes you can switch effects in the case with different effects (Benediction)
note the target must stay within range for the entire duration, if the target leaves your maximum range the spell ends.

Two questions related to this.
1. What happens if you try and cast the spell when you already have a target?
2. If your target gets the spell unraveled, are you automatically aware that the connection no longer exists? I would think so, but it’s helpful to know.

Following up on this one elsewhere with Pedro.
as a side note, I have been greatly entertained by the misspellings on the rules forums of late, I think an Emphatic link would be along the lines of emotional control

I’m assuming this means you can change targets with a recasting of Empathic Link.

the existing spell is replaced with the new one, so if you cast on a new target the spell ends on the old target

Yes, you would be aware of the connection ending… you would “feel” it

Different questions on the spell
1. Can you dismiss it?
2. Can you use it for in-between combat healing if there is no Diminish Fatigue around?
For instance
I am playing an undisciplined Psion with both Empathic Link and Refresh the body. The party does not have a Shaman, Sorcerer-Priest, or Divine caster so no Diminish Fatigue. The fight is over and I am down 6 points while my buddy is down 16 points. I hit him with Empathic Link and then heal myself for 8 with refresh the body. He gets four points and I am totally healed. I don’t see why I can not keep hitting myself with refresh the body even though I don’t need the healing. Say by some fluke of the dice I roll 8 healing three more times on the dice and while I just get a nice breath of fresh air he gains 4×3=12 stamina. 12+4 from the original healing my buddy is full healed as well. YES IT TAKES FOREVER, but it should work.
It should work? Right?

Nope, because you gain no benefit from over healing, your body being healed is what is shared with the target of your Emphatic Link… not the healing energies of the spell it self.
If the spell granted you temp stamina or something like that, you would have a case, but because YOU are not healing, the Target is not healing.
You can always have someone beat on you though $\":twisted:\"$

Yes this would suck cause the next time I got hit I would take 1 1/2 times the damage. I would be better off casting it on a passing bird. Maybe carry a few live mice to take it.
Although this discussion has given me an idea for a character concept. A val’Inares Psionic Inquisitor that tortures confessions out of heretics by cutting on himself. LOL

Humm in which case I think Empathic WOULD be the correct use…
It’s a link between you an another target where the feeling of being damage is transferred creating the “mind makes it real” effect.
