I’m posting this to start a conversation. I’m posting it here because its a sensitive topic.

    Using Herbs/Drugs
    Gathering Herbs
    Mundane Item Creation
    crafting alchemical items
    Rune Creation
How exactly Advanced spells work (range and what combined means)

are all things that are “left to the chronicleers discretion” but require some/significant resources during a characters build. It would be really nice to have a at least a statement of intent on some of those things.

I also think that soon a LARC (living arcanis rules compendium) will be inescapable, People don’t want characters that function differently at every table, I’ve scrapped potential characters that at a judges whim can say you cant have half of your build.

I don’t really care what the rules are, but just as long as there are rules to cover how it works in the living campaign I will be a much happier person, and the players wont be as frustrated about things like undisciplined psion or herbalism

    My personal thoughts and handling:

    Using Herbs/Drugs
If the PC’s already has the herbs or drugs and wants to make a concoction, I would allow 1 roll per scene (similar to a binding) assuming that time/space is available (If the scene is trapped in a dungeon, no).

    Gathering Herbs
I have also allowed this 1 / scene based upon the terrain of the scene. For quantities I’ve used 1d6 + a bonus based upon how much the PC beats the TN (Usually +1 / 5 over the TN)

    Mundane Item Creation
I think allowing 1 roll / adventure (assuming that an adventure is a ‘week’ of time is fair for Good items is fair and noting down on the chronicle page the progress made (or lost) and cost spent (or lost) is sufficient.

That said, I think in general crafting is going to be problematic (especially for creating items of Fine/Exceptional value) as a PC, both in terms of economy and just bookkeeping. A great many people thought keeping track of lifestyle costs was too much bookkeeping and we’ve simplified fate tracking for the same reason. Trying to track week-level progress on crafting across adventures and Chronicler’s seems a daunting task in general. There is also the potential of creating a player economy only for ‘goods’ and not ‘services’. This means that why should someone with an Artisan Skill get to make and sell items for profit if someone with “Knowledge” can’t sell their services as a sage/scribe and make a profit.

    Crafting Alchemical Items
I would disallow this for PC’s. Alchemical items are one of the few ‘money sinks’ in the game and turning them into an income source has the same problems as above.

    Rune Creation
I don’t think this belongs in the hands of PC’s

    Advanced Spells
My personal feeling is if you created an advanced spell, the ‘combined’ spell assumes the ‘Least common denominator’ of everything (Which differs a bit based upon the rules). This means to me:
    A) You get the shortest range of the 2 spells
    B) You get the smallest area of the 2 spells
    C) You get the fewest targets of the 2 spells
    D) You attack the highest defense of the 2 spells (Different from rules)
    E) You take the harshest restrictions of the 2 spells (So if one spell doesn’t affect undead, the advanced spell doesn’t affect undead)
    F) You get the worst AR bypassing (if one spell bypasses and one doesn’t, the combined spell doesn’t)

In exchange for this you get the benefits
    A) Casting 2 spells in one action
    B) Applying either spell’s adaptations to the finished spell
    C) Getting cool and useful combination effects

Any one persons opinions of the grey rules don’t matter unless they are the chronicler at the table.

John its good you have those opinions but thats not the point i was making, I was making a point of the rules are inconsistent from judge to judge and that is making people not choose those character options.

My take on listing out the rules like that as “cannon” is precisely the Henry was trying to avoid

    Additional things not documented well:

    undisciplined psions
how expert archtype can select talents during step 2 (and why races cant)
    what starting languages are

You said you were starting a conversation. I was conversing. If you don’t want me to post just say so. I was offering up what I do As a chronicler so others can comment.

John , I give up man, I feel like you want to talk about a tangent to the subject I’m bringing up, I would much prefer that you respond to the entirety of my message rather than taking the discussion in another direction right away.

We all have opinions on the matter, I’m notably not debating my opinions on any of those matters here, I’m trying to talk about how we need specific guidance on those subjects, not what that guidance should be.

I think Josh is correct that clarification is needed on several topics. We have gone a long time w/o a FAQ/Errata update. I know Pedro has a list, but I am not sure what all he has addressed. In the meantime I, personally, think we could better dedicate our efforts in to compiling a list of the things that need addressed.

You need to be clearer with what you want. Don’t say to are starting a conversation then immediately blow off the start of one. If you just people to list gray areas, say so clearly. If you just want PCI or the campaign coordinator to make a decision say that.

I give up as well because I’m tired of you always telling me my opinion things doesn’t matter. In out of this and will imement whatever you decide you want done.

    John, responded via PM

Matt, do you think a FAQ/ Rules update will be sufficient, in the light of Pedro stating that some of those things will not be eratta ed/ clarified (specifically spells)

I thoughtthe uUndisciplined Psion thing was a future errata and not a hard ruling on the old forums. I know a player who rebuilt waiting for the errata but the errata never dropped.

precisely the problem, we all remember things and on one remembers the same things, and the Eratta document is like a year since its been last updated

Using Herbs/Drugs, Gathering Herbs, Mundane Item Creation, crafting alchemical items- This is a campaign issue, and should be covered in the campaign document.

Rune Creation – this is something that we always felt should be out of the reach of players

Advanced spells work (range and what combined means), what starting languages are, undisciplined psions – See the new errata

how expert archtype can select talents during step 2 (and why races cant) – to be covered in a future update… I intend to revisit character creation and clean it up.
