Q: Is the martial archetype the only one that doesn’t need to spend a talent to learn to use a shield?
A: Correctaccording to the entire FAQ, this answer is wrong, an expert can take it as a weapon and then be granted the armor prof with it also
March 21, 2014 at 3:25 pm #260514AnonymousInactiveBut for an Expert to take it as a weapon, they must spend a talent. A Martial gains proficiency with ALL Armours AND Weapons of their nations, while NO other Archetype does.

… and Weapon Training with any one other weapon of your choice.
ARPG under expert
Q: If an Archetype, Background, or Path grants me Weapon Training (Any) or Weapon Training (Any National) may I chose an Armor Training: Shields?
A: Yes, and in the case of national you must choose an appropriate shield of course.March 21, 2014 at 4:34 pm #260553AnonymousInactiveIf an Expert wants to spend a Weapon Talent on a single Shield, that seems fine to me. They don’t get the ‘universal’ shields that Martials get.

Martial don’t really get ‘universal’ either unless they are from Coryan (from memory, only Coryan gets tower shields).
March 21, 2014 at 5:16 pm #260584AnonymousInactiveIt was stated elsewhere on the forums I believe saying that Martials get Armour Proficiency (Shields), and not just Armour Proficiency (Whatever shields are on their national table).

Nope. Exactly the opposite. I asked and Pedro said that Martial only get Armor Proficiency (whatever shields are on the national table). I had to rebuild one character due to that clarification.

A: Correct, they learn all of their nation’s shields during character creation.
March 21, 2014 at 9:19 pm #260633AnonymousInactiveThat answer doesn’t match the one where you can pick a shield as a weapon proficiency from a national weapons list. Or did that get removed?

Suggested change:
Q: Is the martial archetype the only archetype that doesn’t need to spend a talent to learn to use any shield?
A: No, Martial archetype characters learn all of their nation’s shields during character creation. Expert archetype may also learn to use shields from their “any one other weapon of choice” selection
