Ok a couple things.
1. In an encounter like this I am about roleplaying my character. No secret my character is Ying Hir. In that culture you are not even a man if you don’t have a horse. That kind of culture breeds jingoism. That is my flaw. Also my character has a logic of 3. In that instance I play him as being ignorant and as somewhat of a buffoon. In fact it was ignorance that had him join the CotSC. He was approached by Lord Smcidt who bought him a drink and asked him if he would like to do some jobs for him. Lothair asked if he would be able to earn great honor for the people. The Lord answered yes so Lothair signed up. Next thing I knew I was making oaths for which several are not even part of his culture. I have had a blast trying to play a jingoistic butt who is trying to be humble.
2. As far as his comments about the Lady it was his awful attempt to flirt with her. He is 19 and green full of piss and vinger as they say. With his Chrasma of 8 he doesn’t have much trouble with the lady’s so he is concerned all the ladies should love him. He has flirted with every attractive female NPC he has come accrossed. Tony ran him through an encounter where he was almost killed because he hit on a vampire. The rest of the party had some idea of how dangerous she was but they let him go off with him anyway cause he is somewhat of a jerk. The whole table, including myself, had a blast watching him nearly get killed. Comparing her to a prized stallion would be the highest of praise because nothing would bring more honor to a Ying Hir then having an animal that all other Ying Hir coveted. He was trying to give her the highest of compliments.
3. If you can’t stand racism/sexism/jingoism then you are playing the wrong game. This stuff is real and Arcanis is full of it. Heck racism and jingoistic have mechanical implications. I applaud your characters goals of driving that out. However it as almost as if you are bringing your RL agenda into the game. I hate the word agenda but that is the best I can come up with. I don’t have any goals to have fun. Furthermore I will do my best to play my character as the world is written within the boundaries. I would appreciate you not bashing me for it.
Intermission: I will continue this when I am home and not trying to do it on my iPhone. Feel free to respond but I will be ignoring it till I finish my whole say. Be back at this in about 45 mins.February 27, 2014 at 2:53 am #257687AnonymousInactive4. That is enough about Lothair but I felt that some of that was directed at me. You don’t know me so I felt some of what you said is inappropriate. I do come from an ultra-conservative christian background but when you spend 4 1/2 years as counselor in the Adolescent ward of a mental hospital you either adjust to the standards of equality in today’s world or you don’t last at your job. I am all for civil rights. I believe in equality in the work place for all people. My new boss is a 23 year old girl and I have never had a better boss in my 22 years of working life. That is right I have been paying taxes almost as long as she has been alive. She is smart, fun to be around, and she sets me up to make a lot of money. I would not trade her for any other manager in the company. That saying I also grew up with the idea that women are something more than physically smaller men with breast. When I grew up I was taught that chivalry was not a bad word. My parents just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and I grew up watching Dad treat her always like a lady. He never yelled at her. He opened every door for her. He would only sit after she had sat. He would constantly praise her for every little thing she does. I have tried to do the same thing for my wife over my 17 years of marriage. If that makes me a chivalrous pig then I gladly accept that.
February 27, 2014 at 4:16 am #257697AnonymousInactiveAJ, I’m not trying to attack you personally, I Feel REALLY strongly about nipping this in the bud due to interactions with another player. if you feel that I’m reacting way to harshly it because I feel there has to be a message sent out that this isnt acceptable at all, even in game.
I’m not calling you chivalrous or unchilvarous here, but I have a problem with the equating of women as property. Its not an aspect of the game i choose to pursue, and I play down, I dont accept the “because other people do it its ok argument”
(OOC, A.J. I(Josh) am appalled at your position even under the guise of roleplaying I don’t tolerate sexism (racism or other any discrimination) unless its there to advance a plot, If that is your characters major schtick, I would suggest finding a different foil)
I am not sure what I said you took personal offense to, but I encourage you to call me out on it, so i can try to come to terms, and apologize as needed.
February 27, 2014 at 6:24 am #257701AnonymousInactiveI have talked to a couple people about this and it does seem that you (josh) had over reacted a bit about a silly game. Instead of asking for clarification you lashed out in a public forum. When I read your post I thought I had missed an entire post and it got deleted or something… once I found the one you were talking about if felt unwarranted.
February 27, 2014 at 12:16 pm #257711AnonymousInactiveJosh I appreciate the apology. I just wanted to make it known that I am not a bad guy and neither is Lothair.

Not comfortable with sharing this because Lothair would not be comfortable with it being generally known. After playing Wolves in the fold I begged Henry to let me spend all my considerable gold at the time to Marry the Young Ying Hir widow and make sure she is being able to care for herself. I realize that is not doing my I don’t treat women as property argument but in most tribal cultures including the Ying Hir that is how you would go about seeking a bride. Lothair was not even thinking about owning her he was more concerned with how grim her future was as it would be hard to find a new husband and she had just lost the only person who was still trying to be kind to her.
Mercy and Humility might be literally foreign concepts to him but Generosity is more cut and dry. There have been several mods since he has taken the oath that I did not take any of the money he has earned because I told the DM that he gave it to this or that victim of tragedy. Each time I did this He tried to do it discretely so the rest of the party did not know because the 19 year old didn’t want to ruin his rep.
Much of what you see on the outside of Lothair is whatever the Ying Hir would call machoism.I don’t know why that it was important for me to share that with you all but it was.
February 27, 2014 at 2:07 pm #257718AnonymousInactivePatrick,
“silly game” or not it is a public forum, standing up for women (and other people) has to start somewhere… I call people out when i see it.
Playing a game is not an excuse to be an asshole ( AJ, this comment is not directed at you )

Oh there is no doubt that Lothair is an asshole. AJ just tries not to be an asshole about it. My goal, and the trope I have tried to embrace with him is the loveable asshole who everyone can laugh at because his antics & attitude always gets him in trouble. If I could compare him to characters from popular culture it would probably be a combination of Johny Bravo and Scmidty from the sitcom “New Girl.”
Can that be offensive? Yes. So if I am ever at a table with you and I get out of hand privately let me know and I will tone it down.
Just know Lothair was not saying a woman was property but that every woman has great value. - AuthorPosts
