As the subject says. Looks like the Drury is already sold out because they didn’t follow the September 1st block release date, but nothing else is marked yet.
My wife and I just booked our room in the Hampton. Excited to be coming back to Origins for the first time in years!
September 1, 2016 at 3:03 pm #273438AnonymousInactiveThe Drury always releases rooms 1 year before checkin date.
However, the main reason the Drury is sold out is because GAMA keeps hogging more and more of the hotel. There were only 45 (iirc – maybe less) attendee rooms in the Drury for 2017. I don’t really blame GAMA – it’s just frustrating when I’ve stayed in the Drury every year since it opened.
That does explain why the Hilton couldn’t book Origins 2017 rooms at Origins 2016 when their normal process is also to release rooms 1 year in advance.
I wonder why Origins decided to have a room block date and why they didn’t communicate it to either attendees or hotels (at least the local staff)?

From my experience, Origins has ALWAYS been terrible at communication. The September 1st date was on the con website for a while, and several hotels were following it – I know the Hilton was sold out on the Origins dates until this morning. The date was only in one place, however, and the Drury seems to not care and just do their own thing.
Origins is a great experience when you get there, but man do they make getting there suck.
September 1, 2016 at 4:46 pm #273441AnonymousInactiveJust booked our room at the Hyatt and they are already out of the con rate rooms for Wednesday. Got the rest of the time at the con rate though. Weird. I’ve waited until February to book a room and had no issues like this. My guess I they posted they were opening up the block and people went nuts. This is not GenCon and should not have happened. The con hasn’t gotten so big that rooms should be an issue. Anyhow be warned!
September 1, 2016 at 5:43 pm #273442AnonymousInactiveLooks like the Hampton is also sold out now.
September 1, 2016 at 6:00 pm #273443AnonymousInactiveHmmm. . . considering I can’t even START looking into Origins until March (holidays, available funds, etc) this is rather troubling. . .
September 1, 2016 at 6:21 pm #273444AnonymousInactiveI’d say go ahead and book the room. There might be a non-refundable deposit but that’s better than “noroom at the inn.” Barring that there might be some people in Columbus that could offer you crash space at their place. Can’t hurt to ask. Heck you could save money that way!
September 1, 2016 at 6:43 pm #273445AnonymousInactiveI didn’t have a deposit. Had to give a card, but it’s not being charged. Guess that depends on the hotel, though.
September 1, 2016 at 6:56 pm #273446AnonymousInactiveThe Hyatt said something about a non-refundable deposit. I suspect they charge you for one night’s stay if you fail to cancel and then are a no-show.
September 14, 2016 at 12:00 am #273519AnonymousInactiveI tried to find a room this past weekend, but everything within a block of the con center was booked solid. [Unless I want to pay $250+ per night]

Or more likely, anyone have space for sharing a room? Reply here or e-mail me: d.t.chappell AT comcast.net.
Thanks!
September 16, 2016 at 2:35 am #273534AnonymousInactiveThat’s surprising. Normally, you can get nearby hotels much closer to the con. Normally only the Drury fully books up this far out.
If they are booked up, just keep calling. Even the Drury usually has rooms free up over time as people release them (but not for long as more people book them).
September 16, 2016 at 3:28 pm #273541AnonymousInactiveI reserved our room the day the block opened and they could not offer me the con rate for Wednesday. They were sold out. All the other days I wanted were available at the con rate. This was for the Hyatt.
This is a first (and an annoying one at that) for Origins.
May 10, 2017 at 4:13 am #275216AnonymousInactiveI have a room reserved for Origins, and an extended business trip to Florida has led me to delay too long in finding a roommate. I’d like to either find a roommate or share in someone else’s room. I have a room booked at the Red Roof Inn across from the Drury from Tues night through Sat night; estimated grand total $1250.
If you you would like to share the room or have a room I could share, send a reply message here or (preferably) e-mail me: d.t.chappell AT comcast.net.
