The talent mentions that you raise your holy symbol and cast. Question, it this like a wand where you can cast with a weapon in your other hand? Or do you need a free hand to use this talent?
Thanks
January 15, 2016 at 1:56 am #270917AnonymousInactiveYou should still need a free hand, so no weapon. Your weapon is your faith and the spells you wield with it.
At least that’s my understanding.

January 15, 2016 at 1:59 am #270918frootsnaxParticipantIt hasn’t come up much. I’ve treated it “as a wand.”
Actually I’ve assumed you need a standard hand free (i.e. Not taken up with a shield or greatsword) and the free hand “somantic component” includes raising up the Holy Symbol.

LOL … I just came down on the other side of this. But I’m not hugely attached to my position. As much as I conceptually like the idea of your faith as your weapon why doesn’t raising the holy symbol count as the somantic part of the spell?
January 15, 2016 at 2:36 am #270920AnonymousInactiveI have this talent. I always pictured Haakon standing there with his quarterstaff in one hand, raising his holy symbol of Beltine in the other hand and shouting “The power of Beltine compels you!”
as I drop the Grey Lady’s wrath on their unrighteous souls. At least that’s how I see it working. The somatic portion of the spell as it were.January 15, 2016 at 2:41 am #270922frootsnaxParticipantHa. If you’ve got a quarterstaff in one hand then I’m pretty sure the line is: “You Shall Not Pass!”
This is how I’ve adjudicated it, but now that Hat has spoken I’m wondering if I’ve been too generous.
January 15, 2016 at 2:45 am #270923AnonymousInactiveThing is I need to “drop” the weapon to used the symbol since it’s a polearm, and I have to spend ticks to “ready” it so I think being even more restrictive is a bit harsh. If that’s the case I guess I’ll have to get a sling for my quarterstaff.
January 15, 2016 at 2:59 am #270924AnonymousInactiveI happen to have the rules at work and it does say you need a free hand. So I guess I gotta get a sling for my staff ’cause they don’t have scabbards for them.
I think I’ll make the bottom end pointed so I can ram it into the ground as an action to free up the hand. ‘Cause I’m not about to drop a fervidite staff on the ground, I’ve got too much gold invested in that thing.
On the other hand I always had the impression that Cants depended on a rote method of speaking the words in just the right order. The Eldritch casters always seemed the ones doing all the hand waving. Still it would seem to put us divine casters with two handed weapons at a bit of a disadvantage. Still I agree with Paul that my spells are MY weapons. I do use the staff in combat but not near as often as spells.
January 15, 2016 at 3:01 am #270925AnonymousInactiveI’ve been looking at this talent as well for some pre-gen builds.
Personally, I think it should be treated as a ‘wand’ for casting, as requiring a hand free + presenting the Remnant is quite onerous for what you get.
January 15, 2016 at 3:06 am #270927AnonymousInactiveThat’s kind of my thought and how I would rule at the table as a GM.
January 15, 2016 at 3:16 am #270929AnonymousInactiveHa. If you’ve got a quarterstaff in one hand then I’m pretty sure the line is: “You Shall Not Pass!”
Most definitely if they be Undead….me being an Exorcist and all that…
January 15, 2016 at 3:48 am #270930AnonymousInactiveLooking at the discussion and thinking about things further I would tend to agree with the idea that the holy symbol counts as having a free hand. I believe there was talk at one point of making holy symbols function like wands.
Consider me in agreement.

January 15, 2016 at 4:02 am #270932AnonymousInactiveSo the short answer for FAQ/Errata would be:
“Treat the Personal Remnant as a Wand for the free-hand requirement of Divine Spell Casting.”
January 28, 2016 at 7:14 am #271228PCI_AdminKeymasterYeah, don’t tell anybody but I hear lots of tables just ignore the hand-juggling thing for casting.
You raise your doohickey when you cast (it’s on a lanyard) and you get on with the rest of your business otherwise.
I am curious about actual mechanical arguments for how it’s important that the distinction exists, but otherwise… people do stuff when the cops ain’t lookin’.
