This came up at the Friday game as some players were testing the limits of Attack Focus.

The skill summary table lists balanced and unbalanced as potential melee specializations from attack focus. The implication seems to be that you don’t have to specialize in a specific weapon (spear, fencing sword, battle axe), you can specialize in a weapon quality (unbalanced, quick, versatile). This contradicts the text for attack, which specifies a “type” of weapon. Hmmm…did I say contradicts? Maybe not.

Now me, at best I’m open to classes of weapons (swords, axes, pole arms, pistols, etc) for weapon specializations. Qualities seem overly broad to me, but maybe not. It is a talent. So how are the rest of you ruling on this one?

There’s really no point to the focus areas for Fighting and Magical Tradition skills, since players can’t purchase specializations in them. I go with the specific rules of Attack Focus – you need to choose a weapon, rather than a class or category of them.

It is, indeed, a single weapon from Table 2-27 on page 153.
