    Hi all

Are runestaffs available for purchse (like wands) for the Legends of Arcanis campaign. FiMII has a cost for a good at 2gc. I assume a Fine would be 20gc and an exceptional is 100gc (as if)

Also do Psions and divine casters have a wand equivalent.

Finally, from my reading it seems to suggest runestaffs can be used by any caster unlike wands.

    Cheers

At present, no, not that I have read. They do occasionally pop up in mods (I think at least one has. . . ) though.

Oh really, I thought that because they weren’t special material, and a clear price had been provided in the book, they could be purchased, just like a wand.

I hadn’t even looked at those.

Since Wands are 1 gc and Runestaffs are 2 gc (both still require you to acquire the runes), its something else to add to the campaign document.

NB: The current campaign document is still a horrible mess that needs fixing and PDFing.

As far as I know, Rune Staves are not purchasable in the campaign.

As far as Divine wands, the only one I’ve seen is a Saluwe-specific Divine wand was given out in one of the mods.

    .

I asked about this at a recent convention, and received the answer (though I can’t remember from whom, I suspect it was a gm, and probably not campaign staff) that because it has a price listed, it is purchaseable in the campaign. That seemed logical to me. I haven’t been able to find anything indicating it isn’t purchaseable. If it isn’t, can someone indicate how we are supposed to know it?

    Thanks!

It’s unclear to me if they are “purchasable.”

Given that PCs can already purchase wands and that the runes staves are crafted (and any caster knows how to make one in theory) it seems to me that they SHOULD be able to get one.

I feel like this discussion happened before. Maybe on the old boards. But I don’t remember the resolution.

Unless it is from PCI or Tony or Joe, then it is not official.

It seems like we definitely need a clarification. I had thought that only things specifically noted from FiM were allowed (basic runes and wands) but, reading the rune staff entry, it does seem like rune staves should be available.

Also, can divine (or other non-wand user) use a rune staff for casting? I suspect not but it seems a little unclear to me. Wands specifically spell out elder, eldritch, and primal and only allow crafting a wand if you can use one. Rune staff says “use the Rune Staff as a wand” and says “anyone trained in Arcanum” can craft one.

It is my understanding that psionic can use a rune staff (but can’t use a wand – so this is their only option so far). Divine needs a holy symbol to use runes to help their casting.

Where does it actually say that Divine require a holy symbol? I just rechecked every entry for DSC and Theurgy in the main rulebook and don’t see anything about requiring a holy symbol. Certain spells specifically state that it requires a holy symbol. To use the Personal Remnant talent to cast, you must utilize your holy symbol but that’s the only wide-ranging case I can find.

Per the entry for rune staff, either both divine and psionic should be able to use it or neither. It simply limits it by Arcanum skill (not by ASC/DSC or tradition).

Theurgy spells require no material components (unless specifically mentioned such as with the spells from Sorcerous Pacts), but all non-Psionic spell casting requires somatic components. This means a free hand.

There are two types of Holy Symbol/Wand’s kicking around in the campaign for Divine’s that I know of: The Saluwean Branch Wand from one of the Pricklespur mods, and a special Holy Symbol found in an ancient Ssethric temple of Kassegore in a limited event at Origins in 2013.

Poor wording on my part. The spells don’t require a holy symbol, but that is what a caster of cants needs to put runes on to bolster your spells like most arcane casters can use a wand.

True, but since there doesn’t appear to be anything official saying that we can’t buy them, we seem to be at an impasse. And since there are rules for purchase in the books, I sort of default to assuming purchase is allowed until there is official word that we can’t.

    Hello,

I sort of default to assuming purchase is allowed until there is official word that we can’t.

I’ll bring this up at the next Staff meeting, but as a general rule, one should ALWAYS default on the side of NOT being able to do something rather than assume permission to do so.

So, just to forestall any issues at tables, until further notice, Rune Staffs are NOT purchasable by players.
