**Question: Why are they getting weapon damage die increased 1 die w/ no Speed increase). Is that just an artifact of the Large weapon or is it being added to simulate something?

Correct, Henry. This is from the Core book pg. 238: “Weapons gain a Die Bump to their base weapon damage for each category above Average, without increasing the weapon’s Speed.”

    Small creatures (5×5):
    a) +1 Avoidance. This is in addition to any Racial defense modifiers.
    b) Medium sized weapons are used at penalty. Small weapons (i believe) do 1 damage die less at same Speed. A small version of a d4 weapon (such as a dagger) would deal 1 damage.
    c) Small sized creatures may take the Small Flaw.

**Question (as I don’t have my books in front of me) if they are already Small, why the need for the Small Flaw?

The Small Flaw is in the Bestiary. The Flaw is different than the size category. (It limits a Might die to a d8). Bestiary rules are (generally) meant to apply to “the bad guys” that are statted out. The small size category in the Bestiary does automatically give this Flaw. My rationale for making it optional was to make it available to players who wanted to have it as an option, without pigeon-holing them. The Sama, for example, already have a required Flaw to reflect their adolescent nature. If we require the Small Flaw also, that would mean that a Sama PC would be starting with 3 Flaws (assuming that a player chose a Flaw at character creation). Essentially, I am just trying to be a bit nice with my suggestion and not burden them so much. Plus, as I pointed out, Sama are insects. I am not suggesting that they get Might bonuses in any way, but insects have a huge strength to weight ratio in the real world. I just thought a good way to reflect that would be to not limit their Might (unless a player chose to).

Additionally, their are no current rules for using smaller than average weapons, the die penalty was just a reversal of the larger weapon rule. (It seemed logical to me).

In regards to Reach and Large Sized creatures, I think it should be handled on a ‘case by case’ basis, dependent on the creature’s makeup. For the Agamassi’s Bestiary entry, it does say that they take advantage of their long arms in battle and we have given them the reach ability in 1 Hard Point and 1 upcoming soft point.

While I believe in a simple approach to Large and Small creatures, I don’t believe they necessarily just have to be ‘cosmetic’.

I have been ninja shadowing this thread and re-read the books last night

I’m for the simplistic approach, though I’m willing to allow large characters to keep their 10′ reach.

We made it a point that monsters do not follow the same rules for heroes, so bringing a simplistic approach to the table seems like the best way to go.

Matt, reducing a weapon size would grant a die penalty and speed up the weapon by 1 (of course to a minimum of 3), thus a small short sword would be equal to a dagger in damage/speed, and sadly a dagger would only deal 1 point of damage as a speed 3 weapon.

I see no need for the Agamassi or the Ibon (from what I’ve been told of them) to have reach, but I’m also fine with them getting it.
