Can anyone tell if there are any major universities or libraries throughout Onara? Specifically in Tralia?
June 20, 2014 at 12:51 am #263164AnonymousInactiveThere really aren’t many of what we would think in the modern term as a University. That said, there are major scholarly facilities in Grand Coryan and New Althare’. Names escape me at the moment, however.

There is the Royal War College in Naeraanth (where once you had to go to learn the arts of the War Mind).
In the original Codex from the 3rd edition/3.5 days there is a reference to the University of Naeraanth from Olisand of Seltemeris who is the human narrator of the Elorii section.
There may be other references but that’s what I can come up with off the top of my head.

Higher learning there is likely to be somewhat more democratic, while everywhere else on Onara it would be restricted to the wealthy, the clergy, and perhaps through apprenticeships.
I know I would be interested in hearing a Henry answer for this though, as it is a good question.

Would these be available to the common public though? I would imagine that a student would still need to be wealthy, or have a wealthy benefactor to attend.

Essentially agreed. Most peasants (or worse) get limited education from the Church and or parents. Most “middle class” craftsmen get their education from the master who oversees their apprenticeship. A lot of book learning is the domain of the well heeled.
Still, many characters will meet that bar fairly easily.

June 21, 2014 at 3:18 pm #263299AnonymousInactiveAAAAND if you want it to provide a benefit, there is always the learning at the church that is reflected in “church educated” … I’m not sure when secular learning educations came into being, but I’m pretty sure religious ones were around before that (and are still around in various forms)
but that is a digression from the orgiinal questionJune 21, 2014 at 3:32 pm #263301AnonymousInactiveI really don’t know the point to the question. If you wanted to character to have attended a school as his back story, since it grants no mechanical benefit, write the back story.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but my interest is purely academic (forgive the pun). I think that the availability of higher education can tell you a lot about a society.

It certainly isn’t like modern access, but anyone reasonably wealthy, or sponsored by somebody reasonably wealth could attend – as long as they have the ability to master the curriculum.

Naeranth and Tralia, grand Coryan and Enpyben (Savona, Panari etc), Censure and Nishanpur. A lot less sure about about second tier cities. Yarvek? Old Coryan? Maybe not. Basically one of the functions of early Universities is to provide “bureaucrats” for various court.
