So, I tried to make this as a poll, but alas I can only have 10 options in that format:
What is your favourite Val family? Which do you think is the most effective from a mechanics standpoint? Which do you think are underpowered?
I have always been partial to the val’Virdan and Emman myself, though to be honest I really like what the val’Ossan have become in this iteration. The one I like LEAST in the current rules is probably the val’Assante’ as nothing there really gets me excited.

Mechanically it really depends on what you want to do. Val Mehan make great sorcerers and archer’s. Virdan is awesome in melee for smite action. Dellenov claws rock too for a way to beat the damage die/tick cost trade off. I think Tensen is a little flat this edition. Assante also doesn’t do a lot for me.
October 21, 2013 at 2:24 am #251563AnonymousInactiveval’Holryn. But then, I was a val’Holryn back before Arcanis was a product.
October 23, 2013 at 11:20 pm #251642AnonymousInactiveVal’Sheem. A free Fate point per day is HUGE.
October 24, 2013 at 12:42 am #251645AnonymousInactiveI have always been partial to val’Virdan.
October 24, 2013 at 5:09 am #251651AnonymousInactiveI like the Val’Ishi and the Val’Inares, for completely different reasons:
the Val’Ishi, for the most part, aren’t in the business of screwing over other people. They tend others, destroy the blessed of neroth, and tend to the souls of humanity; none of which leave much time for formenting plots;
the Val’Inares, on the other hand, control the gates of Anshar. Now, as far as I’ve seen, there is only one legion dedicated to Anshar, and it has yet to be deployed into battle. They just guard the gates. Considering the costs to use a gate, the Val’Inares have to be extremely wealthy, yet they never flaunt their wealth. It makes me wonder what they’re doing with all their money…
October 24, 2013 at 5:51 pm #251669AnonymousInactiveval’Holryn.
I was one in the original campaign. The fact that we don’t the bloodlines origins has always intrigued me.
October 24, 2013 at 5:57 pm #251670AnonymousInactiveMy only gripe with the val’Holryn’s is that they really don’t have any mechanics to them aside from “choose another family and apply their powers.” As such they don’t really have too much of an individual flavour in my opinion.
Storywise, they’re great. Mechanically, meh.
October 24, 2013 at 11:23 pm #251678AnonymousInactiveWell according to my Elorii friend named Llamafen, the answer is “Any so long as they are dead.” as he plays with a gold plated acorn that has engraved “Val” on it.
But Kenny’s favorate is Val’dellenov. Nothing like going wild side.
October 25, 2013 at 4:32 pm #251711AnonymousInactivei LOVE Val’Borda
October 25, 2013 at 4:54 pm #251713AnonymousInactiveI’m actually a fan of the Val’Inares, they are so weird
October 26, 2013 at 8:02 am #251735frootsnaxParticipantthe Val’Ishi, for the most part, aren’t in the business of screwing over other people. …snip…
I think they lynch people in Almeric for saying that!
October 28, 2013 at 5:45 pm #251783AnonymousInactiveFrom an author’s perspective, I have a soft spot for the val’Baucisz clan. (I also had a blast playing one as my main in the original campaign.)

The mechanics leave a great mystery! How do they work? They also allow you to explore just about any mechanical concept you want. Big tank? Sneaky? Mighty wizard? Ties to the after world? There are val’Holryn who fit all those things. Also great if you want bloodline mechanics of some stripe but want to dodge the baggage that comes with it. Want val’Mehan powers but don’t want to automatically be known as a scheming jerk? Maybe Val’Holryn. And they are currently the only VAL family to have a Path basically dedicated to them in the form of the knights of the phoenix (though I suppose there is also an argument that the psionic inquisitor is primarily aimed the val’Assante).
And the story! Want to reach toward a white hat in a world of grey? Follow in the val’Holryn footsteps! When things go right in the middle of a crisis, look for a val’Holryn. Like a good mystery? Like where do you come from? Val’Holryn.
The VAL Holryn family called to me the first time I played the game and I’m sure I’ll continue playing them till their secret is uncovered.
