Kio worship the Pantheon of Man but explicitly do not follow the Mother Church. Given geographic location, it seems extremely unlikely they would follow either the Milandric Church or the Church of the Dark Triumvirate.
Would they follow the Khitani Church or would they belong to their own unnamed (as far as I can find) sect?
April 24, 2015 at 6:29 pm #267481AnonymousInactiveI don’t recall it ever saying they didn’t follow the Mother Church. Metra at least WOULD follow the MCoC as it is a satrapy of the Empire, and most of the Kio beliefs would have been absorbed as canon by the MC (like how Mahamemnon is viewed as an aspect of Neroth).
Failing that they most certainly would not be Khitani, and would otherwise be their own sect independent of everyone else. I should note that Blackwand has the only known truly Pantheonistic temple, with even the Khitani don’t include Anshar.

The League of Princes region ostensibly follow the Mother Church.
April 24, 2015 at 6:50 pm #267484AnonymousInactiveI’m confused then. The main rulebook seems pretty clear in the Kio entry (emphasis added by me):
The Kio do not fall into zealous observance of the gods. They do honor the Pantheon of Man, but not as part of the Mother Church of Coryan.
??

I would take Henry’s comments and the quote above to mean that from a practice of faith perspective they follow the tenets of the MC while paying lip service to the hierarchy. So for the purposes of casting spells they are treated as MC but politically aren’t as likely to follow decrees and directives from the various church officials.
I expect this will be clarified when the Kio book comes out later.
With a sweep of his hat,

The Kio in Metra are apparently in Coryan’s orbit. Whon, while not directly in Coryan’s orbit, still follows the teachings of the Mother Church even if they don’t follow the hierarchy. So who can smite or castigate who is a tricky business in the Westernlands. Most mods should suggest a Kio’s affiliations…otherwise, up to the judge to figure it out.
The Western Lands have at least 2 major fault lines that bisect (trisect?) the area. Like the Eurpean Balkans there’s a lot of diversity packed into a small area.
April 24, 2015 at 8:47 pm #267490AnonymousInactiveAlso remember the joy of the Mother Church: They are so liberal and inclusive (on an overall basis) that unless someone very clearly is NOT, you can probably default to say that they are. The Milandesian Orthodox followers very clearly declare themselves to NOT be MCoC, but many of the Yhing Hir tribes and Kio either are indifferent to the church practices and are metaphysically the same.
Yeah, religion is complicated in Arcanis. . . .
Addendum: Everything we know of the MCoC is that it is by far the more cosmopolitan and inclusive and liberal of all the (known) major churches. While it does have an Inquisition, the official role of the inquisition is less to maintain orthodoxy and more to keep out heresy. This has been abused many, many, MANY times. Additionally, though Elandre’ champions a VERY Orthodox, very ‘traditional’ view, really only the Illiirites are following her from what I’ve read while the rest of the church is fighting her on that. It is this liberalism which has allowed the Kio’s gods (like Ykrie, or whatever the spelling is) to be equated to Hurrian, or Tzitzet is viewed as Sarish in official MC canon. After all, if you accept your conquered/absorbed nations gods and legitimize them by ‘assigning’ them to one of your own, you can over generations pull the followers of that god to your own without actively having to kill them off.

You asked what sect do the Kio belong to and I assumed you meant what sect for purposes of the Smite affect.
For Smite purposes, they are considered of the Mother Church sect.

Yes, I was mostly asking for purposes of Smite and Channel.
Thanks for the official clarification.
I’m still confused how the statement about Kio (“not as part of the Mother Church”) can possibly equate to them being part of the Mother Church sect (for any purpose) but just having the official answer clears up the rules implications.

It could be. I may just be that I’m missing something since I’m not a long-time player (~2 years). Reading through the rulebook, I took the Kio statement (under race) to be just as strong as the Milandric Church (under Milandir) entry. To me, both plainly say they don’t view themselves as part of Mother Church in any way (which is why I’m confused).
April 24, 2015 at 11:26 pm #267499drafitParticipantFair enough, Steve. Let me try and shed some light.
First we have to ask, “How does Smite work?” [And to be clear, this is just for flavor – it should NOT be used to tweak or otherwise change how Smite works!]
In my mind, Smite works because of two things:
1. Your unshakable faith in what you believe in and
2. You understanding that your opponent doesn’t believe in what you believe in so fervently.
So, while the Milandric Orthodox Church is hewn from the metaphysical body of the Mother Church, little future Holy Champions are taught not only how the people from the Milandric Church (and others, one presumes) differs, but how what they teach is “wrong”. This creates a fundamental belief that followers of such a belief system are heretical teachings offensive to one’s own belief structure. And as we know, faith is is paramount to most (if not all) Divine abilities.
Which leaves us with the Kio.
As far as they’re concerned, they pay lip service to the Mother Church and have even built cathedrals to its glory. This is mostly a political move to remove any chance of direct invasion/domination by the Empire as well as good business.
As far as the Coryani/Mother Church are concerned, their beliefs are being “followed” and if they are not being taken to heart, well time and missionary work will make that happen.
The Kio say the right things, the Coryani turn a blind eye and no one has to die.
While not perfect, it seems to work.
I hope this sheds some light on my previous statement.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
April 24, 2015 at 11:59 pm #267502AnonymousInactiveThanks very much Henry. That does illuminate things for me.
