    The spell Whirling Blade states:

On a successful attack, your weapon deals damage as normal plus an additional 1d8 of the same type as your weapon.

The question is this “as normal”. Does that mean I get to add in my strength or dexterity modifier? Or just the dice and any modifiers specific to the weapon (aka +1 for a +1 weapon)?

For example, with a 14 Strength and a +1 Longsword. Does it do 1d8+1d8+1 or 1d8+1d8+3?

This is a great question, and I think it’s vague from the wording of the spell.

Compared to what Magic Missile does (3d4+3). Average: 10.5 damage. I don’t think you get the ability modifier as damage. A thrown +1 long sword would be 2d8+1 with an average of 10 damage. That’s rough parity. An ability score bonus would take the average damage higher w/o requiring a higher spell slot.

I agree it’s ambiguous. Also although a few points extra points of damage is advantageous, it’s unlikely to be the kind of bent/broken combo that swings a battle.

    My opinions.

I checked with the StatMonkey. He said it is just the weapon damage, no ability modifiers are added.
