So can buffs in 1.5 not be roll based and be passive only?

Sorry. I shouldn’t have put a one liner up. On my phone though. But removing rolling for buffs eliminates the scene issue.

Whenever we get to 1.5, no rolling for buff spells.

Benediction of the Gods should not have a roll to see the bonus, just check passive.

Summon bindings, no rolling for the bonuses just check passive.

Refreshing the body for a wound should require a minimum passive, not a Psions can he wounds in between scenes at 1.1 because val.

Call to Arms, no roll for distance. Otherwise outside of combat you can pull from any distance.

Now this should be on a case to case basis, not all non damage spells should suffer this fate, but by removing the CTN roll from buffing the scene thing becomes much less of an issue.

I guess I’m confused by the 1.5 restriction. This affects everyone.

Are you suggesting that we get rid of rolling all together?

    Not tier 1.5, Arcanis 1.5.

Not, I don’t want to get rid of rolling all together. But rolling action skill rolls should be for ACTION! Not getting a higher buff number at tier 1.1 or healing wounds at 1.1.

Rolling CTN checks are great for Unraveling the Thread, and any offensive spell that targets defense. Rolling CTNs should be for when there is a consequence for failure. With buffing the consequence for failure is just winning less.

Bindings would be okay to roll I guess because you can still only attempt one per day, but depending on the mod, sometimes you get a week in between scenes.

    Okay to roll examples:
    Black Ice
    Castigate
    Elemental Bolt
    Larissa’s Fickleness
    Heat Wave
    Leech Life
    Excellence in Action
    Things that target defense

Shouldn’t get to roll for CTN:
    Blessed Protector
    Call of the Wild
    Elemental Guardian
    Grave Blight (any)
    Ebon (any)
    Elemental Aura
    Crown of Radiance
    Body of the Warrior
    Personal Illusion
    Most Bindings

    Not tier 1.5, Arcanis 1.5.

Get out of my head…. I have already been thinking the same thing…

Call me Professor X. But I’ve thought this since the beginning. Some spells should not allow for CTN rolls.

I’m trying to understand this discussion. Do you believe some spells should not *allow* for CTN rolls (You must always use your passive) or that some spells should not have CTN’s at all and just succeed without any chance of failure?

Some spells should not allow for a CTN roll to increase or alter the effects. It should still have a CTN for adaptions and talents. In the case of chance of failure (black tongue for example), you would be able to roll, but not for results beyond your passive and the penalty.

By removing the CTN roll on buff spells and utility spells, a lot of scene headache gets removed. Not all utility spells would be penalized for this though, we have have to look at the spells on a case by case basis.

Rolling for CTN should be dramatic and have the consequences for failure shouldn’t be I try for a +3 again.

So for spells, like Personal Illusion, where the CTN increase is for additional effect, you believe that a caster should not be able to do those effects until their passive is high enough to auto-cast it?

I have already considered CTN: XX (Passive) as a notation that the spell is always cast at the passive arcane value of the caster

Mix a non passive spell with a passive spell.. the new spell becomes passive

    Correct.

If we do this all (Passive) spells will have their base CTN and Adjustment CTN modifiers reduced by -1 to -2 depending on what they are.

So what is the intent behind the change?

    1) Is it to make certain ‘effects’ only available to those who invest heavily into their casting attribute?
    2) Is it to reduce the amount of dice rolling?
    3) Is it to make non-binding buff spells unavailable outside of combat due to ‘rolling until you get a success’?

    #1 and #3… #2 is nice…
