I like it too. I had suggested something similar to this, but a bit more broadly worded. The character would receive 3+ Passive Logic to be chosen from the [3 Archetype skills] + Lore/Social skills. Either solution works to fix the problem, with one being a bit more flexible.

I slightly prefer Johns way as it is more flexible. As John has pointed out, this is not the first time this suggestion was made. However, I would remove the word trained from the language, in southernkisses version, so that you can pick up new social skills or knowledge skills. While there may not be a lot of social skills there are a lot of knowledge skills.
This change would be better than the others to make these archeteypes closer to the efficiency of the expert.

I strongly oppose the idea of letting them take new skills with this advance. There are already other ways to add skills. Part of the reason that the advancement is currently limited to the Arcanum + 2 skills is how powerful/useful the Arcanum skill is. I am willing to agree to bring the Arcane and Divine skill options in line with the Martial and Experts one. I’m not in favor of making them the best skill advancement option though.

I honestly don’t think the power of the arcanum skill has anything to do with it, or at least shouldn’t. Casters have the arcanum skill to raise just like martial raise their combat skills and experts raise whatever they want. It’s the key to their abilities.

For casters in combat both their melee and their ranged attacks all run off the same skill. For any physical combatant doing both ranged and melee is already a minimum of 2 skills. It is a stronger single skill.

I agree on importance, my comment was that it’s stronger. Let’s say the passive logic value is 3. With the proposed change, the casting archetypes can advance 5 skills at 3 ranks / tier outside of their combat skill. A physical combatant can advance 4 skills at 3 ranks / tier outside of the 2 combat skills needed for melee and ranged combat. The Arcanum skill is also useful out of combat depending on the spells. It’s a 2+ skills for 1 trade off. It’s stronger.
As I stated, I’d be ok with bringing the advancement in line with the others assuming they’re combined. From a consistency standpoint for advancements it fits better.
With a sweep of his hat,
Paul
