I’m thinking this was another discussion on the old forums (or, at least, I can’t find it on here)…
Do racial languages count against your pLo languages at chargen? National language explicitly does count against that limit. What about if your racial language is your national language?
January 16, 2014 at 6:15 am #255339AnonymousInactiveWhen you take your race, many of them get “X, plus your native language”. These are listed as either “Automatic” or “Bonus” languages, which means they do not count towards your limit. As such, if you are playing a Coryani Val with P. Lo of 3, you get 5 languages.

January 20, 2014 at 4:52 pm #255485AnonymousInactiveA: Pg 93 Step 4 … “Lastly, your race will provide your Hero with Known Languages.”
B: Pg 122 Nation and region Table has a listing of Languages for each region.
C: Pg 155 “In addition, at Hero creation, each Hero learns a number of Languages equal to their Passive Logic Value, one of which must be your national language.”
As much as I rmember thats the rule parts for languages.
Ok there are multiple reads on this Let me try to ennumerate them step by step:
Step A
You pick your Race first so those languages are granted for free.
ALTERNATIVELY
You might intrepet them as having to be boughtStep B
When you pick your nation and Region, you might intrepet them as bonus languages Most people dont when looking at the larger scope of rules.Step C
Then you get your Passive logic in languages.
Here is the big debate:
one way to read the rule is that you have to spend your first point from this on a language that matches your national list, EVEN if you already have those languages.the other way to read that rule is:
You have to spend your first point on a language on your national list, IF you have all the languages on your national list, you can spend that point on any other language.January 20, 2014 at 4:54 pm #255486AnonymousInactiveMy personal Intepretation:
A You pick your Race first so those languages are granted for free.
B National lists dont grant any languages
C Then you get your Passive logic in languages. Then you have to spend your first point on a language on your national list, IF you have all the languages on your national list, you can spend that point on any other language.January 20, 2014 at 6:06 pm #255488AnonymousInactiveB: Pg 122 Nation and region Table has a listing of Languages for each region.
B National lists dont grant any languages
One thing you left out is this line under the table:
Also, choose 1 of the Native languages as appropriate.
This means that your Race grants you a bonus language, and your Nation grants you a bonus language (Which may or may not be the same as your race).
It is due to these, that I would always interpret the Passive Logic to be “If you don’t already have your National Languages, you must spend 1 point on that.” (Basically your “C” Interpretation)

For example, in the Hinterlands you do NOT get Erdukeen, Yhing Hir, and Low Coryani. If you are of the Yhing Hir tribes, you get Yhing Hir. If you are from Censure, you get Low Coryani. If you are from Erduk, you get Erdukeen.

As part of the Nation Language choice? That makes perfect sense, since it says “Choose 1 as appropriate”. If you want to learn one of the others with your Passive Logic though, that is allowed.

January 20, 2014 at 8:59 pm #255495AnonymousInactiveUnless Native Nation is given freely by race.

They are in different steps of character generation; therefore, if the intent is that if the 1 point of Passive Logic is used to take the language you get at the Nation step, it needs to have errata.

Agreed. Also, the talk of having to take all my nation’s languages first sounds like more diverse nations are actually a penalty. And for some characters it wouldn’t make any sense to pick up ss’ressen just because I’m from Milandir.
January 20, 2014 at 11:26 pm #255503AnonymousInactiveyou do realize that the passive logic bit isnt in any of the character creation steps, its detailed in the linguistics skill

Which is part of either Skills or another step.

January 21, 2014 at 12:53 am #255505AnonymousInactivewell thats a strong assumption that I’m not making.
this is a giant Grey area in the rules, and its complex, MY simple rule of thumb is unless they are a linguist (talent or skill) Characters are going to have Passive logic + Racial languages
