Do you have to take Weapon Training (Unarmed) or is everyone considered proficient with Unarmed? I’m assuming everyone is proficient but I can’t find anything that says one way or the other.
January 19, 2016 at 2:16 am #270993AnonymousInactiveYou have to take it to get the tricks. You have to have melee unarmed to avoid the penalty.
January 19, 2016 at 2:28 am #270994AnonymousInactiveSo the only characters that can get the Unarmed weapon tricks are:
- Ssressen[/*:m]
- Experts that burn their “any weapon” proficiency for Unarmed[/*:m]
- Initiate of the Gods and Templars of Anshar or Jeggal Sag[/*:m]
- characters that spend a talent to gain Training[/*:m]
The other major “problem” is that Weapon Mastery (Unarmed) requires Weapon Training (Unarmed).
That seems really limited.
January 19, 2016 at 3:53 am #270997AnonymousInactiveThink of it this way:
Scenario 1:
You are up against 12 year old kid never taught how to really throw a punch swings at you….he is untrained and draws a free strike.Scenario 2:
Someone who has training, despite level of proficiency (aka…ability to hit with strikes) can attack you, but has not learned enough to do nifty pugilistic tricks.Scenario 3:
You are fighting Ronda Rousey. Not only do you need to worry about her ability to connect, you need to worry about what wrong angle your limbs will be in when she is done.January 19, 2016 at 4:26 am #270999AnonymousInactiveMatt, I understand the differences of Weapon Training (Unarmed) vs skill in Melee (Unarmed). However, it just seems odd how hard it is in Arcanis to actually become fully “trained” in Unarmed. Gaining the Weapon Training is very limited. Gaining Melee (Unarmed) is more open but still somewhat limited.
Overall, Unarmed is almost as limited as Double Spear which is supposed to be a very rare weapon. This seems very weird.
January 19, 2016 at 6:13 am #271000AnonymousInactiveSteve,
Lets put it in perspective. For the ancient Olympics how many people (% of total population) trained for Pankration? How many people in the US are legitimately* trained in martial arts?
* I say legitimately in that it would be viable in a combat situation against an armed & trained opponent. Since that is the level of proficiency we are talking about.I just hit 14 years of martial arts training with a focus on self defense and am probably only equivalent to a character with unarmed training and a few ranks.
January 19, 2016 at 2:00 pm #271003AnonymousInactiveI don’t know enough about Pankration to really make any useful comment. For comparison to the US, you are much more likely to run into a gun than melee weapon (and vs a gun, any melee weapon (or unarmed) is very likely to lose). More importantly, Arcanis is a fantasy world with orders of warrior monks – yes, at least part of that is because it started based on D&D (they do seem to be downplayed in ARPG).
January 19, 2016 at 4:04 pm #271004AnonymousInactiveIn Arcanis as with our own world, anyone can throw a punch, but if you are not trained in it it is much different than if you have received training. Without training you can have too weak of a punch, or you could have bad form and waste a lot of energy. The difference of those who have been shown how to throw a punch and those who are wild amatures is represented by the skill Melee (Unarmed).
Weapon Training (Unarmed), which unlocks weapons tricks, represents formalized training in a martial art. You can use your punches for more than “hit that” with Weapon Tricks like Stunning Strike. While the skill represents you having been shown how to punch, the talent represents what you can do with a punch.
Weapon Mastey is just that, a level of mastery in the weapon. It shows that you are so proficient in the weapon that you can hit more accurately, hit harder, or generally be more effective with your hitting.
January 19, 2016 at 9:28 pm #271006AnonymousInactiveI understand there isn’t supposed to be a tradition of unarmed combat throughout the known realms, and that is reflected in the lack of unarmed being a region weapon skill. I find this extremely odd, but I accept it. The only place I think there is a disconnect in the rules is in the pirate islands. Unarmed fighting is important enough there that it is one of the base skills available for people from the region – which seems to me to indicate a significant unarmed fighting tradition in the islands, but for some reason unarmed fighting isn’t a weapon proficiency associated with the region. I find that odd.
January 19, 2016 at 9:52 pm #271007AnonymousInactiveFor reference: The Roman legions did not teach unarmed fighting. There was not really a need for that since they were heavily armoured. From what I figure, the only reason there were D&D style monks in Arcanis was because there was a D&D monk class that had to be worked into the system. That is likely why the concept became more scarce in the modern rules.
Without an established unarmed tradition, the best you’ll find in a society is “avid hobbiests” by comparison. The Pirate Isles it makes sense because of the stereotype of drunken brawls associated with pirates in our cultural view of them.
January 19, 2016 at 11:12 pm #271008frootsnaxParticipantI don’t entirely see what the fuss is about.
The original question was do characters start out with Weapon Training (Unarmed) for free and the answer is no. People don’t naturally start out with a gift for unarmed combat vis-a-via armed combat. To be dangerous with anything you have put in time and effort.
There is a secondary question/comment that mechanically it seems hard to pick up weapon training and mastery in unarmed combat. I kinda agree with this and personally, if running a home campaign, I might give it to martial archetype characters as a freebie. A lot of basic training from armies to self defense classes teach at hand to hand unarmed fighting. At a guess it’s because the stakes are lower. An accidental hard punch is easier “to fix” than an accidental gun shot or knife stabbing. I disagree somewhat with Cody and his assessment of Legionsirres and unarmed combat. Though I agree as heavy infantry the core of their training was elsewhere, I think if we jumped in a time machine to “do research in the ancient world” that we’d see that you were worse off picking bar fights with Legionaires than with civilians.
Pre-Tukufu I played a Nierite and he feared getting killed in a bar fight because he sucked in melee without a sword in his hand(s). That simultaneously bugged me…and gave me an interesting hook to RP. On the other hand I’ve built a few characters as experiments tha centered on unarmed combat. I did not find it THAT onerous to spend the two talents on weapon training & pugilist.
Final note: No game that I’ve ever played simulates combat perfectly.

It’s a little worse than that. To be effective at unarmed damage-dealing, you need:
- Weapon Training – much harder to get than for most weapons[/*:m]
- Weapon Mastery – pretty much a wash because you need this for weapons too[/*:m]
- Pugilist[/*:m]
- Iron Fists[/*:m]
- Grand Master Path (for Mighty Swing) – you need this for some weapons but quite a few get Mighty Swing[/*:m]
I don’t think there’s any other weapon that requires that many feats to be fully effective (even Steel Whip and Double Spear require less).
January 20, 2016 at 12:01 am #271011AnonymousInactiveI don’t see an issue. Fists are not as effective as knives. It SHOULD take more to make them as effective as a dagger.

I agree with you on the weapon training argument, it seems that should be easier in general for a martial to get than it is right now (especially since this is an odd case of an expert having a starting advantage over a martial character in a fighting style), but on the rest I disagree.
It makes sense to me that it should take some additional training to be as deadly with unarmed combat as most people are with a dagger – that is reflected in the talent requirement pugilist. After that, you are as deadly as a dagger wielder. You have to remember that unarmed is a speed three weapon, so it isn’t going to pack the damage a great sword will.
The fact that there even is an iron fists talent I think is great, and generous of the campaign design to support unarmed fighters with a useful talent when they want the campaign to reflect that unarmed combat is uncommon. The fact that unarmed combat might be suboptimal for large single blow damage dealing (no mighty swing) is true of many weapons, and is easily countered by the numerous advantages inherently given to unarmed fighters- never unarmed, is what is used in grapples, etc. Plus, it’s easily gotten around by putting on a gauntlet – which is also a big advantage unarmed has – it has numerous weapons that can all be used, and whose weapon tricks can all be used, off of one base weapon training talent – between the basic unarmed, the gauntlet, and the cestus with just weapon training (unarmed) you can get access to 7 weapon tricks (shielding, grasp the blade, mighty swing, stunning strike, from earth to sky, rapid strike, and hamstring), which is significantly more than any other weapon provides.

Where does it say that you get those free with Weapon Training (Unarmed)? Unless I missed something, each of those is a different weapon requiring its own Weapon Training.
