Henry,
Thanks for adding the land option. I am not yet sure if I’ll partake of it I’m already cpommitted to a decent amount and there’s a month to go) but I am considering. Regardless of the nay-sayer(s) I think this is an option most players will like, and encourage you to not regret deciding to add it – its cool. I think you should wait for the final tally before deciding how valuable it is/was. Even if it does not produce numbers like you thought/hoped it would, it was a great idea.
December 25, 2013 at 12:48 am #254068AnonymousInactiveHenry, to say that there’s no way that the PCs could afford a home or small bits of land makes absolutely no sense of any kind. If the PCs are that poor, how can any of the common masses we’ve helped over the years own anything at all? You cannot possibly be serious when you say that a 2-3 room home off on the periphery or low / middle class district of a city would cost “tens of thousands of gold”. If that were the case, no one but the hyper-wealthy would own anything. I’m NOT suggesting that the PCs be able to buy a manor, villa, or estate – those sound exactly like the kinds of things that belong in the Kickstarter Land Grant.
In all fairness, this is a very good point. On the other hand, just because it is economically reasonable doesn’t mean that it is something that the campaign has to open up to PCs. It would be very easy to argue that there aren’t enough hours in the day to both maintain a property and adventure. If you want to have a PC retire from the campaign and buy a farm, no one would say boo about it.Ultimately, this isn’t something that needs to be decided now, or even during this Kickstarter campaign. Lets be thankful for the holidays, and what is shaping up to be the most successful PCI Kickstarter yet.

And I am totally, totally okay with that line of reasoning. My point was that land ownership was something the campaign staff was considering – yesterday it was a very real possibility. But now, unless players purchase the add-on it is no longer a possibility. That doesn’t make sense to me and it doesn’t sit well with me, either.I’ve said it before, if the Kickstarter land options are so extravagant that the characters would never be able to afford them, as Henry has made them sound, then that’s AWESOME! But the existence of the Kickstarter land option should not negate the possibility of owning common/modest housing.
And *that* is what I have the issue with, the precedent of a for-money option overruling / negating a free option the campaign was already considering. I don’t give half a crap about the land itself, but the principle above is in what I have an interest.
Take for example the pledge level to own a business in the First City. You didn’t hear me say boo about that, nor will anyone (though I wish I’d been able to jump on one). The argument that the characters are too poor to start a business (along with the time required) completely holds for me – start ups cost stupid amounts of money. None of the other pledge levels, nor add-ons have been under consideration by the campaign staff (at least not publicly), so you won’t see me complaining about any of those either.

Obviously not. But let’s be honest – RIGHT now you can say, my character has a small one bedroom flat in Grand Coryan and NO ONE would blink an eye. No money is exchanged, either real or in-game.
What the KS option is for those, like John Bellando (not picking on you,John – just using you as an example as you noted your family history) who wants a CERTED property that is beyond what people can hand wave away.
So no – what I’m doing here is not anything like what you described. As far as I’m concerned, and I don’t think any of the Staff would have an issue with me saying this, ANYONE can state that they have a small apartment or home in the “not affluent” part of town. It won’t be certed or fancy, but you certainly can.
What I have heard is people wanting the option to buy the Villas, manors, farms, and even the vineyard I used in the example. AFAIK there isn’t a player who has the in-game gold to purchase that, so I made this option to give them what they wanted.
And while we’re taking about bad precedents, etc – I debate AT LENGTH with my business partners about what we offer to the players for money. I don’t want to rip-off anyone and want them to get the most for the money. I try and think on how to assure that everyone who places their support to us in cash will not feel any buyer’s remorse later. I’m nixed quite a few ideas, such as putting a Reward Level where you pay to write a monster, Talent, Path for the game. I know that many other KS do that and I am astonished that people pay big bucks for that. I won’t do that, because we’ve always had an open door policy and strive very hard to allow the player unprecedented access to us.
So when I put up ANY reward level, it is done with great consideration and with an eye on giving that patron the best bang for his buck.
Now, before you write that you didn’t say that, I know you didn’t, but that’s the vibe I’m getting so I wanted to get this out here before this spiraled out any further.
I hope that this post clearly gives you (and everyone else) a clear delineation of what the property purchased on the KS is and what you can freely do during the campaign.

December 26, 2013 at 3:37 am #254097AnonymousInactiveHenry, will there be a physical release of the Ssethregore book, and will it be available as a KS addon?
December 30, 2013 at 3:23 pm #254284AnonymousInactiveSo this may have already been mentioned, but I have not seen it. I understand that there will be some period of time between the end of the kickstarter and the deliviery of things like the Cradle of Empires sourcebook and a lot of the stretch goals. Is there a time estimation for delivery of the PDF/Electronic versions of the books ($40 addon)? I wouldn’t think it would be long since its all previously completed and released products, but I wanted to check.

I have the PDFs ready to go, but I have to wait for the KickStarter to finish processing and the surveys to be filled out. I would hope that this will be completed within a few weeks of the end of the KS.
December 30, 2013 at 8:03 pm #254298drafitParticipantHello Josh,
Henry, will there be a physical release of the Ssethregore book, and will it be available as a KS addon?
Maybe.
No.
The reason is that until I finish writing the new chapter and see how big it makes the book, I won’t know what it will cost to print and in turn, unsure what to properly charge.
December 31, 2013 at 1:07 am #254319AnonymousInactiveAlright, Thanks for the heads up Henry. Cant wait for the books so I can delve further into Arcanis and the Worlds of the Shattered Empires.

aka Tallus OctaviusDecember 31, 2013 at 5:30 pm #254357AnonymousInactiveSo, we are a little under 12hours away from the New Year! Let’s ring it in by making it te Year of the Sseth!!!!! The Arcanis: Cradle of Empires Kickstarter is $190 away from the Ssethregore book stretch goal. Gamers unite and make it happen! If you were waiting to throw on a bit more for add-ons, do it now! If you have been thinking you would participate, but will get around to it later, hesitate no more!!!
December 31, 2013 at 5:35 pm #254359drafitParticipantHere here!
December 31, 2013 at 5:46 pm #254361AnonymousInactiveAs of right now we are:
$150 away from Ssethregore book
$2,650 away from extended Bestiary in Blessed Lands book
$5,150 away from Sorcerous Pacts (primarily, but not exclusively for elorii)
and $7,650 away from the Kio book.
(And who knows what’s after that? Henry does…)If every existing backer added $1 to their pledge we’d have the Sseth book.
If they added $17 we’d have the extended bestiary.
If they added $34 we’d have the Sorcerous Pacts.
If they added $50 we’d have the Kio book.Alternatively, if we added 10 backers at the $15 level, 6 backers at the $25 level, or 3 at the $50 level we’ll have the Sseth book.
If we double our number of backers at the $15 level, we’ll have the Bestiary; at the $25 level we’ll have Pacts; at the $50 level we’d have the Kio book.So tell your friends. Get your characters that Useful Item. Get your plot of land (which the campaign staff will work with you to come up with an interesting back story for if you like, or have a brand new, never-been-lived-in estate constructed to your specifications on the backs of Coryani slaves or Milandisian labourers).

December 31, 2013 at 5:50 pm #254365drafitParticipantThat’s some nifty number crunching, Tony!
I would add that everyone can help out by spreading the word through FaceBook or other RPG related forums.
Thank you all for your support!
