Vincens also nods in greetings to Servius, but defers the conversation to the more social of those present. His hands unconsciously run lightly over the strings as if following some unheard melody with a touch so light as to not give it voice.

“In good health, Decios, but not perhaps in the best of spirits. That snake Paramonos continues to be a thorn in my side, and I have some horrible suspicions… nonetheless, that is not what we are here to discuss. Since it seems our other brethren are otherwise occupied, it falls to you few to pass on the word to them so that we may take advantage of an upcoming opportunity.

The Emerald Society has found the location of the Vault of Larissa’s Lament. I have been able to discover a little about it through the Inquisition records, and what I have discovered troubles me greatly. The Vault is a First Imperium stronghold, a rare instance where shrines to all the gods are present. How it came to be known as the Vault of Larissa’s Lament, I do not know, but I do know that it was lost over three thousand years ago, even before the Theocracy of the Cleansing Flame. It is mentioned in an ancient Axunite text, as “a forsaken fortress, bound in stone, its secrets left to languish for the good of all men.” Some of our more radical scholars have theorized that it is the resting place of various weapons of unspeakable power, put there and buried to keep them from Leonydes val’Virdan. Others believe it is the resting place of not merely a Valinor, but a rogue god, brought low by the Avatar of Nier and imprisoned. All this conjecture has no substance, of course. If it did, I would bring the might of the Inquisition against it as heresy to uncover this place.

Unfortunately, I have no proof, and indeed some evidence that this fortress may offer support for our own position within the Orthodoxy. We seek to save the souls of all mankind by proper worship of a unified pantheon, after all. The First Imperium, before its decadence, worshiped the gods properly, and any opportunity we have to study it must be taken.”

Servius looks gravely around the room at each of you.

Servius looks gravely around the room at each of you.

“I’m sorry I could not help overhearing. I was trying to take a nap upstairs, but sounds travels too well here.” A very large cloven-hoofed Dark-Kin clomps down the stairs. He nods at Decios and Haakon as a zealous light fills his eyes.

“I’m glad you are finally concerned with the pursuit of a unified pantheon, the Inquisition is a corrupt and foul tool that will turn on us. The vision of the Church that they seek to protect is a mockery of the true faith, they would view us all as Heretics when in reality they are the heretics. I’m tired of being sent to do their dirty work when it doesn’t help us in our true mission.”

“We must find this information so that the Church can truly be rebuilt. The travesty that has become the Mother Church and this new pathetic Milandesian Orthodoxy must come to an end, we must rejoin with the Dark Trimvurient and show people the power of the True Pantheon. Once we do that we can move on all of the enemies of mankind such as the Elorii and Ssethric Empire. All Elorii should have been killed with their weak and pathetic gods, they are the knife in the back of humanity waiting to strike, their time can not come soon enough.”

Marcos’s eyes flit to Alessia’s as he raises a questioning brow before he turns his fervor filled gaze back on Servius.

“Also Servius what do you mean by our own position in the Orthodoxy? Are we not unified in our belief, do we all not strive to return us to true Pantheistic worship and the celebrate the glory of the the Pantheon? Or is there some division within the Orthodoxy that we are not privy to?”

“Greetings, Marcos! It has been much time since our journey into that Ssethric Temple.

“Pardon me, Servius, but I do not think that he was attempting to imply overt schisms within our organization. I feel confident that anyone who was able to find their way to this place believes in the Gods, and not just in their patron, and I am sure the majority of our order feels the same way. That said, the Orthodoxy, like any other order, has a hierarchy, and in any such hierarchy there is room for advancement in position.”

Turning back to Servius, Haakon continues. “Please, what else do you know about this Vault? I would dearly love to find evidence of Pantheonism there which we could use to spread the word of the Orthodoxy within the Mother Church, as well as to those schismatics in Milandir and Canceri. Anything I can do to help in the pursuit of this cause I will gladly set myself to!”

Decios stands, excited, his large frame tense.

“Marcos, excellent to see you! I approve of your convictions. The elorii plan for all our deaths, we should never forget that.

“I too am willing to venture to this place and look for real truths. Reality to me is that all the gods have their place in the pantheon and should be honored by us mortals.

“What specifically would you have us do, Servius? What do you advise if we find evidence opposed to our beliefs?”

Vincens considers the newcomer and the reactions of the others. “Well met Marcos.” His voice is quiet but firm. “I can think of a far more likely answer for the name. As the Oracle of the Gods she sought the truth in visions of the future. She reached a point where what she saw was so horrific that she sought to forget through any means necessary and so was born the Divine Harlot.” He pauses for a moment to let that thought sink in.

“Would not the resting place of her vision, of the divine being who was once the Oracle of the Gods, of the place where that horror was visited on her not warrant the name Larissa’s Lament?” He looks at each of the others in turn. “I would suggest that the phrase ‘it’s secrets left to languish for the good of all men’ is a reference to the secret horrors she saw.”

His vision shifts to stare off into the shadows. “Perhaps the question we should ask is whether we are indeed better of uncovering those secrets or leaving them buried. It was enough to drive a goddess mad. We are but mere mortals…” his voice trails off for a moment, lost in thought. “Still, knowing what is to come would give us an opportunity to prepare.”

“Much as I wish I could travel with you, my duties will almost assuredly keep me from the dig. If I am able to get away, I will be there. For now, what meager counsel such as I can provide is yours.”

    Decios listens to Vincens closely.

“You are a well versed man. Interesting theory that has merit. I agree that we should be cautious before we or others start to dig too deeply or ignore signs of what may best be left buried.”

Haakon shakes his head. “While I can agree that caution is warrented, the chance to have access to an unsullied fortress of the First Imperium, with all the knowledge of that time–not to mention the evidence of the true worship of the Gods as outlined by Illiir Himself–is worth some risks! In Neroth’s name, we should pursue this if for no other reason than to keep those upstarts in the Emerald Society or the Jial of the Phoenix from getting there and then peddling away its treasures to the highest bidder!”

Vincens looks at Haakon and nods. “I agree, it’s worth the risk. Still the more you know about what you’re likely to encounter the higher the chance of success. With Cadic’s guile, Larissa’s luck and Hurrian’s strength we should do well. Let us hope we are not asking for Beltine’s blessing in an untimely meeting for Nier’s judgement.”

Vincens stares into the shadows for a minute, lost in thought then nods if coming to a conclusion. “I’ve figured out how to slip away for a few days,” his quiet words gaining confidence as the details of his plan crystalize. He looks back at the others. “I’ll be there.”

Looking back at Servius, “Do you have any more information about this site, or possibly the sorts of threats we may come across? Also, since our two orders have worked in the past before, is there any chance of bringing the Followers of the Azure Way in to aid our efforts? While their motives are not identical to those of our Order, they also have a vested interest in maintaining the sanctity of the First Imperium.”

“Pardon me, Servius, but I do not think that he was attempting to imply overt schisms within our organization.

“Oh Haakon, don’t be naive where there is power there are factions. Where there are factions there are schisms. I’m only taking his words at face value. Just because I act like a simpleton in front of most people doesn’t mean I actually am one.”

“It is a form of survival in the Church of Larissa when the two sides are waging a not so secret War, and you are a lowly male Dark-Kin who also happens to be able to call upon the divine powers of Illiirr as well as Larissa. I don’t want to draw attention to myself as special or gifted. People dismiss me as a huge lump of muscle, and I take advantage of that when I can.”

“Schisms are a way of life on Onnara I am just curious what “Our” position is.”

    Servius frowns.

“‘Our’ position is the reconstitution of a fully realized Pantheonistic worship. Marcos is very correct in his blunt way: There are schisms everywhere. Even the Mother Church as it stands is in a state of complete schism, with each god having their own rites, their own priests, their own temples. The Matriarch has not taken up the mantle of Felician by any means; she truly is chosen of Illiir, including his inflexibility and pride. So ‘our’ position is that of Felician: Reunite the disparate churches. Reunify worship of all the gods, together.

Decios, I don’t believe this fortress will challenge our beliefs in that regard. Rather, I believe it will reaffirm them, and there are many out there who will oppose that. The clergy squabble for more power, and the tighter Elandre grips it, the swifter it will run from her grasp. The gods mean for us to be better than that, as we were in days gone by.

Vincens, you have a keen insight. It may be that you are right. I don’t know. For those of you going on this expedition, finding the reason behind the name of this place will be one of your missions.

Your second mission is to gain as much insight into the workings of Pantheonistic worship in the First Imperium that you can. Any information at all is useful.

If you would like to touch base with the Followers of the Azure Way, it might not be a bad idea. We don’t want to antagonize the Emerald Society though, so keep it subtle.

I don’t know what threats might be in this place. Presumably, everything living has long since died. You may need to defend yourself against unsettled spirits, and the First Imperium builders were always clever with traps.

There is one other strange thing though: A Larissan prophecy, uttered to Aulus years ago. He never could make heads nor tails of it, but… it might make some sense in the Vault.”

Servius pauses to compose himself, closing his eyes before intoning:
“A shattered eye watches itself/and waits with endless patience/for a chance to be released.
A thousand facets shimmer/a darkness clouds the soul/and the false will show the way to the true.”

“If we consider Vincens’s insights and that old prophesy, I wonder if there is a connection. A shattered eye, a thousand facets of that shattered eye? I wonder if that is what speaks to the insanity of the Oracle of the Gods. Maybe she, or a favored servant, looked into something and ‘saw’ so much looking back from that she lost her grip. Ok, I’m rambling, but that imagery or notion just crept up on me. The more I think the more it seems to me there may be something, or multiple things that should stay locked up in this fortress.

“In any event, I am pleased to have something substantial and important to focus on. I am not good at the sneaky contact work so will leave that to someone else. But I can help to protect or lend a hand in the preservation of what may be found in this ancient place.

    “When do we leave?!”

Waiting for a sufficient break in the conversation, Vincens offers his thoughts, his voice quiet but intense. “I would not be surprised if the eye was a large gem broken into pieces. The line ‘a darkness clouds the soul’ makes me wonder if this is or was something like a dwarven soul shard,” he shakes his head dismissing the wild speculation, “likely not, but that’s what it reminds me of.”

“What assistance and cooperation can we expect from the Emerald Society? Am I correct in believing that we’d trade artifacts that are not of a religious nature for information and artifacts that are? As much as I might not like it, I would expect that trading a 1st Imperium Legion Banner to a representative of the Azure Way would be worth it for texts and artifacts relating to ancient worship would be the goal, correct?”

He looks at Servius, “Is there any way for us to identify a member of the Azure Way or Emerald Society?” He moves his attention to take in all those present, “What about representatives of the Sanctorum? Would we work with them? I’ve heard stories of Harvesters infiltrating past gatherings and putting knowledge and items in the hands of the Sorcerer-King. How much of a concern is this for us?”

“I can provide a safe place to stay and meet in the First City if needed,” realizing he may have overstepped his place he falls silent in deference to the others.
